Bulb changing.

Our heads is illuminated by a circular light fitting about 4 inches in diameter and dating from the mid eighties. It's turned on by rotating the body of the unit. We have owned the boat for about 5 years and fortunately in that time we have never had to change the (tungsten) bulb. However, when that time comes how do we remove the cover? Apart from the on and off positions there seems to be a third position but no pushing, shoving, cursing or twisting seems to have any effect. Several years ago on a charter boat I remember changing the bulb in a similar unit but, for the life of me, I can't remember how to do it. Can anyone help please?

Clockwise on. Then anti clockwise - 1 click to the off position. Then push the fitting in and turn anticlockwise as far as it will go. The fitting should then drop/pull out.

If you look carefully at the silvered plastic bit you should see a key - which the clear plastic bit you are trying to remove lines up with.

Many thanks. That's sort of how I remember it but I wasn't sure of the sequence of events and was afraid to use too much force in case I damaged it. It's easy when you know how. Will give it a try when I next go down to the boat.

It sounds as though the light is a product marketed by Hella - and still available if needs be! I had several on my previous boat. One thing I discovered that the plastic locating lugs can break easily if the clear lens is not pushed up/in evenly when rotating it for removal. Although not making the light unuseable, it makes the lens rotate more loosely when operated.
