Bukh Engine & Gearbox Oil

Got a Bukh 36hp circa 1981. Can anyone advise me on the correct engine oil viscosity. I've been informed that a 15W/40 Mineral for both the engine and the gearbox will do.

Just like to check that the info is accurate.

The workshop manual calls for a monograde oil to API CC or CD, SAE20 at temperatures up to 25C and SAE 30 over 25C, for both engine and gearbox.

In practice, API CC is now almost unobtainable and API CD obtainable with difficulty in UK but easily in Europe. You may have to go to API CF-4, which also means you will not find a monograde to that specification, forcing you to use 15W/40.

If you want to stay with the correct specification you can buy it, as many classic cars still use it, e.g. Esso X100. Or look at the Shell product site and enter Rimula C.

Monogrades Multigrades any Grades!
Motor Motorcycle lawnmower or lathe oil.
Might even do snake oil!
Always prepared to answer telephone queries , techo etc.
Also for tcw 3 etc 2 stroke oils.
 
John Cutler, local Bukh specialist at Thornham, advised me never to use multigrade in mine, only the SAE 30 will do according to him, Morrisons Oils sell it, if you can find a stockist locally. Havant Motor Factors near Portsmouth stock it, as does John Cutler.

Not very impressed with the rockoil website, silly to clever introduction that takes far too long to load and the skip intro button doesn't work.

Do they realise just how many potential customers being too smart costs them.
 
I rang the guys at Bukh and they also suggested 15w/40. They said Shell do it in their 'Rimula' range and BP in their 'Vanellus' range, which appear to be aimed at commercial vehicle engines.
I saw in Halfords they also do a mineral based oil at 15w/40, would you buy Halfords own or stick to 'branded' products?
Doesn't it all come from the same source anyway?

That's why I use it.

When I winterise my engine I refill the sump with Halfords, or some other cheap stuff, and use one of the big name brands during the season. This is probably quite uneccessary but it's a habit I've got into. The BUKH engine is so robust it probably wouldn't complain if I ran it on chip fat!
 
Don't use anything with a higher API than CF-4 (e.g. CH, CJ, etc) If you can get API CD that will be better. Try the Shell Rimula C from the link I posted on another thread.

BP Vanellus C5 Global 15W/40 is rated API CG, CF/SH. Personally I think this may be too high, so it would not be my choice.
 
I use mineral 15/40 oil in the engine - basic cheap stuff from Tesco, local motor factor or if I want to spend 50% more from Halfords. However for the gearbox I use straight sae30. I found that a chnadlery beside a canal had a large stock of oils suitable for "old engines" and gearboxes.

The engineer who replaced my Bukh gearbox said not to use a modern engine oil in the gearbox as they all used detegents which wasn't good for the gearbox -- no idea if this is actually true, but I have followed his advice. Gearbox oil does not get a hard life in comparison with engine oil and therefore doesn't require chnaging very often -- well virtually never !!
