Bukh DM10 gearbox

My Bukh DM10 gearbox has been playing up. It sticks in 'ahead' at random, which makes down tide berthing/mooring hairy to say the least. Two different marine engineers have had the thing in bits and working in the workshop. Neither could find anything wrong with it. Any ideas? It is getting expensive having the engine lifted out over and over again.

Have you checked the controls and cable?

I've just experienced almost the same with a new DV10 (sticking in reverse). It seems the yard didn't bother to swap out the cable when they replaced the engine. Consequently the cable was on its last legs. Changing it has made life a lot less interesting.

The same thing hapened to me. After stripping the box 3 times and studying the workshop manual inch by inch I lapped in the drive cones. This stopped the box from jamming but it is still a bit sticky. I suspect that the grit used in the lapping process is critical. Perhaps a auto gearbox mechanic might suggest the correct grit. I will have to strip and repeat one day if it gets worse.
