Building our boat

Hi Kristof,
Lancing Marine in Chichister marinise Ford tractor engines...I can recommend them personally as I bought a transit Ford 2.5 diesel & gearbox/ prop., fantastic combination that works straight out of the box. Very Very reliable.

Marinised tractor engines cost about 40% less than equivalent marine engines, and are a better choice because if the lower revs/ higher torque output for ploughing. They also supply props & Shafts, gearboxes. Everything just drops into place.
Tractor Spares are available even in third world countries.

Everything to do with boats is automatically marked up by 200% at least!!!

Please publish some specs....cruise speed, fuel consumption etc....

Sorry to correct. Lancing Marine are in portslade near Brighton.

Thanks for the advice!
But I think I will buy the engine a place more nearby since I need some back-up when installing it myself.(I'm living in Belgium..)
Crossing the channel while there is a dealer at 5 minutes driving sounds a bit to weird to me ;-)

Kristof, perhaps you can have a look in the Netherlands for a engine supplier,
as they are a much more boating country then us,
they have more experience and heritage with these things,
and not too far away either,
and your cruising area might be in Holland anyway, in the distant future.

no usefull contacts myself, could be worth posting on the Navis Forum

+1. You will need local assistance with the installation.

Here it is: the new engine. Last months there was not much time for working in the boat, but now I'm planning some works.
First thing I have to do is replace the engine-base. The original base was made for the Weichai-Deutz engine, but does not fit for the new engine.
This is a FPT (Iveco) 6-cyl NEF 67 150hp. Ordered the engine from a nearby dealer wich can offer some assistance if needed.

Will post some more news soon.

Last week I was able to do some work on the boat.
I started with installing the deckhatches: 1 for the salon-area and 1 for the master bedroom.

Next work was installing the rear window. I allready had the complete window, so in half a day everything was in place.

Kristof,
how did you finally endup making the side windows ?
I believe I can see that they are in place ?

No, I wish they were... For now there I've placed some GRP sheets to keep wind and rain out.

Like we said on METS the problem with the 3 windows is that they can't open in an easy way, as you can see in the picture.

I'm thinking on making 1 big windowframe instead of the 3 smaller windows, so that I can slide one part open.
Not sure yet what type of profile I have to use with the radius on the back.
To be continued...

Today a first effort was made to bring the motor in the boat...
Not a big succes, but I was expecting some problems. After looking at plans, measuring, thinking, some more looking at plans etc... we just started with the forklift to see what we could do.

The first issue is lifting the engine over the edge. The forklift can't raise enough and the opening at the back is not wide enough to pass:

In the picture the hatch of the aft-deck is open. Besides lifting over the edge, another problem is to reach the opening and lower the engine to the bottom.

One option would be turning the forks upside-down to gain a half metre, but I don't know if this could give some safety issues..
Think I need a night sleep to come with new ideas

Even if the forklift was on a trailer the forks would have to pass through the opening in the transom for the engine to be placed, unless you used longer straps, which would mean a higher trailer Catch 22 situation..
Given the likelihood of damage to the boat using the forklift, and the cost of repair would it perhaps be better to rent a 7 tonner with a HIAB?
It would probably cost less than building a ramp.

Hi PCUK and Caliban,

Thanks for the comments!

I have no welding skills, so I think we will do another try with the forklift next weekend and If that don't work, I think I will rent a minicrane to avoid further accidents..

In the meantime the welder and us are thinking about the railing, here is a first effort for the upgoing poles to check if the angle is right. As a test we tried a 60/30° in 30mm Stainless Steel 316.
The lower part is massive SS for mounting it from under the GRP.
The welder did a good job in welding and polishing, I can not see the boundery between the two bars. So far so good..
The handrail will be made out 35mm SS.

Some more progress is made last week.
First I've cut out the window-dividers to make a mould for the side-windows. We will place sliding glass windows.

The engine and fresh water tank are also in the ship's hold, but my photobucket is full, have to find a service with more space..
