Building our boat

Some more progress is made last week.
First I've cut out the window-dividers to make a mould for the side-windows. We will place sliding glass windows.

The engine and fresh water tank are also in the ship's hold, but my photobucket is full, have to find a service with more space..
How did you get the engine into position in the end?

Hi Rafiki,

One of the problems was that I could not see what was going on on the upper site as I was driving the forklift. So my brother assisted me, which was a great deal!

Then I turned the forks upside-down, so I gained half a meter of lifting height.

We managed to drive the forks just in the opening of the aft-deck and with a bit of luck and manpower we could place the engine again in its crate. After that we removed the forklift, so we could lift again and turn the engine in the right position and get rid of the crate.

At this moment the engine needs to move forward about 2 metres, that will be a job we have to do without machinery ;-(

Does anyone know a webservice where I can get more than 2GB of uploading space for free?

........... but my photobucket is full, have to find a service with more space..

not sure what your problem is,
have been using photobucket during years, now perhaps over 500 pîcs on there.
Only the last few day's, I have a problem that photobucket works very slow, not sure if anybody else has this problem ?

you're really progressing now, let the pics coming pls
thanks for posting !

Yes +1. I have much more than 2Gb for free on p'bucket.

The new photobucket site is a nightmare. They launched it last year but allowed users to select to stay on the old site. That choice was withdrawn a couple of weeks ago and now you must use the new, awful, site.

You can no longer tick say 10 or photos on the thumbnail view page, and generate bbcode (the "[IMG}2 stuff) for all of them with one click. You now have to do it one picture at a time. A 2 minute job is now an hour+... Really disappointing

Nice work Kristof. I suppose I'm a bit worried about the loss of the B and C pillars - with a wave or snow on the roof there is a lot of weight on the A and D pillars. Do you plan to reinforce them? Also is the plane onto which the new one-piece window will sit flat? Or did they use the B and C pillars to introduce a few degrees of angle?

The one piece window is going to look good though

Good point on the roof loads JFM, but won't the sliding windows give some support although they might get sticky to move with any load on the roof?

Removing the pillars does indeed affect the stiffness of the roof. The solid part of the sliding window will give some strenght, but maybe I have to reinforce the roof by placing a pillar in SS on the inside.
According to the company that will produce the windows it shouldn't be a problem. The windows are +/- 2.8M long and only 1/3 will slide open.

update after 6 months

Hi folks,

here is a quick update:

The side windows are in place after a lot of polyesterwork.

The railing is almost ready, last pieces are almost ready to install.

On the inside the stringers are attached to the hull and superstructure. Ready for isolation.

Cheers, Kristof.

I used PU-spray to fill the gaps. The curved parts of the hull I sprayed full with foam. At the moment I used about 40 cans of spray :)

I made the mistake of pushing sheets of foam between the frames on the ceiling without gluing them to the hull.
Unfortunately when it gets cold condensation drips down between the joints.........

Getting in a professional foam sprayer costs a lot, its probably cheaper the buying the cans!

I try to make it as airtight as possible to prevent condensation, but I'm thinking to add an anti-condense foil.

I had a few professional foam sprayers on the boat to have a look, but the problem was that they wanted to do everything at once. By doing it myself I can spray as I'm making progress at my tempo and I'm sure that everywhere is at least 5cm of insulation.
Price was about the same if I count all the cans and insulationpanels, not to mention my working hours..

An other problem was that at several places they did not have enough space to spray a flat layer.

good progress!

check if you wish some more advanced sheeting with built in insulation properties. (various types exist, reflective aluminum sheet, with single or doublesided thin plastic sheeting on sealed air gap). Effectively a reflective membrane that stays away from all other material to avoid conductive heating (or cooling in your case most likely)
Not exceptionally expensive, tricky to install and shouldn't be interrupted (which is a bitch to plan and implement)

cheers
