Budget sailing on the Clyde

I am considering a lifestyle change in about 5 years which will necessitate a reduction in the current marina/racing budget.

Looking at the clyde there is drb marine but this is still £1500 a year for a 32 foot mooring.

Seems like some of the clubs are much cheaper. Helensburgh sailing club for example looks like £270 a year including the mooring fee. I suppose you might have to add on buying a mooring or getting one laid originally. And maybe the crown fee?

Im not looking for a free lunch. If I join a club I am happy to do work parties or whatever to help out.

Is this sort of thing possible? Do people leave boats on these moorings in the winter?

What is the lowest moorings budget possible? Or should I just give up?!!!

btw I just happened to come across your posted request. We don't normally roam the forum(s) looking for stuff to do!
It would have been appropriate for you to make the request by "reporting" your post using the little black triangle at the bottom left.
I've left a "forwarder" in the Lounge, which will disappear in four hours.

Does your Helensburgh Sailing Club cost include winter storage, launch and liftout? You won't be able to keep your boat on a mooring for more than 7 months in the year - April to October. I think the cost at DRB is £580+VAT for the summer, then the same for winter storage. These costs include launch and recovery.

I know of a few folk who keep their yachts on moorings in Loch Riddon - a short drive over the hill from Dunoon. Ferry from Gourock, obviously. Rosneath is quite a hike from Helensburgh, and the quickest way of getting there from the north end of the Erskine Bridge is via the "haul road" from Loch Lomond.

Cardwell Bay moorings are a bit cheaper than Helensburgh - £30 membership, £45 Crown Estate, plus the cost of mooring gear and maintenance. You will still need to find winter storage (~£700+VAT incl. cradle for your boat) or pay a bit more to keep her on a pontoon. Other mooring associations and areas are available.

You will be joining the select band who have abandoned the Forth for the west.

Ok cool. So can be done for say less than a thousand a year? Sounds like it. And then if my crew want to go racing they can pay for the sails!!!!

Just over £1000 when I tot it up but if it is £100 a month thats good......!

I kept my boat on a mooring in Cardwell Bay in the early 1990s. The club had a licence with the Crown Estates, you paid your club membership and as awol says a fee which went to the Crown Estates - much less than you would pay for an individual/personal licence. Provision and assembly of the mooring was the individual's responsibility - we used to drag all the stuff down at low water on a weekend in the spring then do the same in reverse in the autumn. A local "boatman" (Ritchie's?) would lay all the moorings then deposit them ashore in the autumn.
I can't remember how much it all cost, but it wasn't very much.

I think Ritchie's ran the passenger ferry between Gourock & Kilcreggan.

You're going back a bit. Moorings are now Neil Cunningham or Andy Lancaster, both have that magic cachet of insurance. Mine is round at Ashton off RGYC with launch service and Arts & Crafts clubhouse with bar, restaurant and what passes as racing on Tues & Wed. The choices are manifold and the returns vary with what you are willing to put in - or you can park in a soul-less marina and pay through the nose.

I have a mooring at Port Bannatyne. It costs me £40 per annum to the Crown Estate, through the moorings association and £120 to Neil Cunningham for maintenance. It needs a new riser every five years or so, which is another £200.

No insurance company will touch Kames Bay in the winter. Hitherto I have gone into the yard at £82.50 per metre (including craning and pressure wash) plus £75 cradle hire but this year I am planning to stay afloat at £75 per metre - though I'll be having a fortnight ashore at some point which will cost more.

All in all my mooring and storage costs come to about £1,000 per annum. There are several moorings for sale at Kames Bay. The going rate for one in good condition is starts at about £350.
 
Good stuff guys. Thanks for all the input. Looks like I am spoiled for choice! Just got to get shot of the job that takes up too much time!
