Exactly how we do it, and we too find we always use the main anchor because it is so convenient. That frequently may be for even a short 15 minute stop, while in a cellphone coverage area, to send/receive business emails, etc.

I can add to your comments that the chain self stows too.

We have a nylon rode on board as well but never use it for anchoring, one reason being the inconvenience of having to coil and stow up to 110m of wet rode after getting the anchor on board. Also, one can hose chain clean as it comes on board - a nylon rode is difficult to hose when coming on board, both because of its physical nature and because is it is difficult to hold a hose and hand the warp on the warping drum with only one person. If a mixed chain/rope cable is used it is an absolute pain to handle mechanically and like a rope only cable anchor retrieval cannot be automated.
