Anyone who was out in the Solent over the weekend couldn't have helped but see the brown 'slick' everywhere. I thought it was just in our marina until we went to the IOW and it was never ending. I guess it is some kind of algae 'bloom' - does anyone know for sure? If you fall in do you need a stomach pump?!

Certainly looks foul. Doubt I'd have gone in for a swim even if the sea had been a bit warmer, as it was floating around in Osbourne bay.

Had to give up weaving to avoid the stuff, it was bloody everywhere.

Heard from the boatmen in Cowes that it's algae - they were saying that it's the sun that brings it off the bottom.

Which was relatively nice to hear - we'd been thinking that the sewage outfall had been just a little busy.

I heard it was Algae. I think the boat "Algae" should be prosecuted for dumping their holding tank. Must be a big boat eh? Or, possibly not discovered that they had a holding tank for the last 123 years.

Its what fishermen call the MAY BLOOM usually an indicator of the water warming up and increased light levels usually lasts about 14 days then clears and once it clears the fishing really does start to improve with the arrival of the summer species notably the Mackeret!!!

Algae

Who is this guy "Algy"? I thought he was a character in "The Importance of being Ernest".

My theory is that all this talk of dodgy rudders is an elaborate bluff, that Glen Rosa has, in fact, been re-launched and that jimi has celebrated by, um, once again emptying The Tank of Which We Shall Not Speak.................

Yep, its not as bad as looks!

I heard a ferry call up QHM Portsmouth to report it - eventually they reply was it happens about this time each year dependant on temp, sunlight etc.

It looked to me out on the Solent as if we were about to ground as the water was so full of 'bottom'!

Great. So we're about to see the return of the seagulls c%@pping all over everything.

Has ANYBODY found an effective deterrence?
