Broom Continental info

Are HT 6354 spares like hens teeth?

Cannot help with Arch or canopy. Worth a post or searching on Mobo chat to get a steer on the availability of spares.
One of our club members got so fed up with the difficulty sourcing bits for his engines, especially the contra rotating one he actually purchased a complete engine and gearbox for the spares.
Have been looking at Broom Crowns recently, personally think the asking prices for boats with the old Perkins are somewhat optimistic, considering the very high hours logged on these ancient engines and the need for a re-engine in the not too distant future.Think fuel pumps not longer around. ?
Any Volvo engined boat is far better long term prospect.
Finding something even to fit will be fun not to mention new gearboxes.
The asking price really does need to reflect difficulty of finding bits and bobs and possible serious major outlay if engine not able to be repaired.Poss more than boat is worth.
Worth thinking about. !

Thanks in advance[/QUOTE]

I too heard that spares were getting hard to come by. Strange, as am pretty sure these same engines were fitted to London buses?
Personally think these boats look better without radar arches. The standard Broom fit was a varnished burgee mast mounted on the saloon roof with later boats having a S/S mast in same location.
Lovely roomy boats but now nearly 50 years young.
You need to be a keen diy person!

These older Brooms are languishing on the used market and taking ages to sell unless they are really cheap. You'll see most will be be reduced at some point. Or those that aren't are hanging around- there's a Crown in Essex that has not sold due to overpricing and the photos are now at least two years old and it has deteriorated in the meantime but the owner seems oblivious.
Apollo of this forum has re engined his Crown, so should be able to give you a rough idea of costs if you are thinking of that option.
The Continental is a handsome beast, but you'll need to spend...

Did spot that one and think the price has "softened" very recently.
Made enquiries about Crown in at Brundle with an almost reasonable asking price until a further email revealed the thing had done something like six or seven thousand hours. Now with the best will in the world, thats into rebuild territory and as there no bits, its a couple of replacement lumps and a lot of downtime and aggro for any long term owner of one these cracking boats.
Some people would say a better all rounder than the Turbo 36....... could not possibly comment. :)

I guess you pays your money etc...but i would always rather spend £40K on a Broom (or a Freeman) than a Binliner with Outdrives just personal preference.
I have seen Stainless "Gantry" as i call them on Ebay but you need to measure up. Another possibility is fast approaching Beaulieu Boat Jumble. Otherwise its a fabrication job. The canopy you can get made by any trimmer.
What caused me to upgrade engines was the leap forward in technology, indeed just bought Mrs Apollo a mini cooper and it has the same horsepower as the HT6354 engines but instead of 6.5Litres it is 1.5! Add to that all the reliability, availability of parts and even things like the alternator kicks out 110A instead of the ancient 25A Lucas.
