Lying, cheating, reneging on deals, borderline contractual fraud......

......that's what we as brokers are having to put up with at the moment from alleged buyers. (That fooled you didn't it :) )

Bl**dy hell, I feel like giving up and going sailing again. I have seen the worst of human nature in the last few weeks from a very small section of people but it's pretty ugly. In each case it's backfiring with no one winning because the lies are so transparent- it just created a lot of unnecessary animosity between owners and buyers out of all proportion to any gains involved.

Rant over.

Enormous porkies, and to be fair its only been a few people but they were pretty outrageous, and I'm used to most shenanigans. They had a nasty edge, that was the trouble. :(

Exactly the same in estate agency, buyers and/or sellers trying to shaft each other, and we are always piggy in the middle - and easy to blame by either party, or both.

Sorry but no sympathy. I know the strokes estate agents pull (when times are good) and now they wonder why folks are stuffing them. Its a buyers market and in these hard times folks are going to haggle for the best deal they can get. Who can blame them ?

In the Lounge someone was questioning if the public were to blame for the recession.
If anyone is at fault it must surely be the Estate Agents who convinced folk they could get them more money for their property than another agent. Not for the vendors benefit but for their commission take. If anyone is to blame for the property slump it is the Estate Agents who manipulated mans greed for their own benefit.

The tide has turned and now they dare to complain. You reap as you sow.

I hope there are some decent honest estate agents out there. But on the last two occasions are bought a property the agents lied through their teeth. And whats more there was no need for it, I would have still purchased if they told the truth. Just when the lies were exposed it left a very bad taste which spoilt the whole "new home" feeling.

That's not how I've tended to see it in the past - I've more often encountered agents that appear to undervalue a property, granted maybe so that they can collect their commission without having to make much of an effort to find a buyer.

Lets not go down the Estate Agent route. Yacht brokering is different ( No disrespect to Estate Agents). Yachts are far more complex and diverse than houses and the level of technical knowledge required is much higher, especially if conducting sea trials. The significant difference is the yacht broker has the additional role that the estate agent leaves to the conveyancing solicitors, such as the contracts, title and VAT history finance and escrow.

With a survey we can be running the contracts for up to 28 days before exchanging and transferring title.

I almost dare not say it but two of the worst examples of- lets call it being dishonourable- have come from an estate agent and solicitor.

I think that it is a size thing (the size of the brokerage that is…). I would never go back to the main dealer who I bought my boat from (there was a degree of lazy incompetence) but have since met two excellent small brokers for the same dealership who I wish that I had 'given' the commission to. There is a lot to be said for good honest customer service (and that does work both ways!!!)
