Brokers who sell you a boat and who offer to buy it back at what you paid for it, who then don't. Who then charge you seven % plus VAT but stick 2 boats the same as yours in front of the queue ( which it turns out they already own) then charge you extra brokerage mooring fees even though they know you have packed in your job and are waiting to sail off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Trust none of them.
Brokers!....if you deal through them you could soon be broke, and that will certainly drive you into a rage
Seriously why don't you give a serious go to trying to sell it yourself first!

May one ask why you are appointing a broker? Is your craft difficult to sell? The full fee inc VAT will be a few pence short of 10%.
I suggest if you see your make and model anywhere in the private sale columns you join them for a short while - expect results in 4-8 weeks after first appearance of your ad. The trick is to let the prospects view the boat unencumbered by you giving a running commentary - harsh but true!
Thanks Peter, have just started the private ad route 2 weeks ago and had an encouraging start, am just forward planning and weighing up the options, more for logistical reasons than anything else at the moment i.e. If I have two boats then I want the one for sale in the best spot while the berth is free for the new one.
Things that I am interested to learn about are; Is it any better if the broker is part of an association, or should you avoid one that isn't. If they insist on sole agency is it 'cause they are good or awkward. is it better to have a few acting for you, and are there any tricks they playwhen it comes to settling up. Do they normally charge storage or not?
Also, if I eventually sell and the buyer can be proved to have first come from my own efforts, are they due the whole fee?
Had a look, realise I've seen it before Simon, looks good. Would you care to comment on the questions above, now that you have had some free advertising!
Hi there, let's hope Kim won't shoot me for this.
Q. Brokerage charges
We charge 2% plus VAT and an optional contract service for £500 plus VAT.
Negotiate with any other suitable broker.
Q. Sole brokerage
Not recommended, but do not go with to many. I'd go with us and Berthon (Robin Berwick) If required, Berthon can probably provide storage on site for a negotiated fee and offer good old fashioned service.
Q. Membership of Associations
We are BMF (British Marine Federation) members.
If you can get down to your boat at short notice, sell it yourself via a small ad in YM. Build a web site if you can (see www.yacht-goldeneye.co.uk for a really smart web site. Put it in a marina for a month, if normally on a swinging mooring. Give it a damn good clean inside and out. Research prices on line and back issues of YM. You'll do a much better job than a broker.
However the key is for the yacht and you to be available for short-notice viewings. Only if this is not possible should you consider a broker.
Jeremy thanks for this, saw your site before, have you bought anything yet and if not where are you up to. Have started off by doing all of these things apart from the website, but co-incidentally have posted on General Forum about this today so plan to start creating when my mind gets in gear. Will travel to boat no problems, it is cheap enough so should sell, but I am wanting to cover all options.
I encountered your online brokerage during my search for a yacht but was left confused and disappointed.
First: It was not clear whether you are running simply an online introduction service or if you do the physical showing around boats part of the brokerage function. What percentage of the yachts listed have you actually visited?
Second: the profile of the yachts listed is strange. Of the 150 sailing yachts 1/3 are priced over 100k, 2/3 are priced over 50k and scattered all over the globe. This left me with the impression you had pumped (legal) database extracts from other brokerages into your web site.
That said there is still a reasonable number of UK boats and the web site design is better than most.
Thank you for your comments.
Did you contact us? I am sure that if you had called us you would have found us helpful and knowledgeable.
The most important point is that all boatmatch listings are legitimate and listed by owners and in some cases other brokers. All vendors are required to provide proof of ownership as part of the registration process. We also work hard to ensure our listings are up to date, I can assure you most of our stock is current.
While we may not see the majority of the boats listed, we allow buyers and sellers to talk and the buyer makes his decision to travel. We are selling a number of boats successfully on this basis, including a purchaser who travelled last month from California to buy a Beneteau 40.7.
Had a really negative experience once, bought a boat through a broker, paid in full, but the broker went bust before we collected the boat. The receivers impounded the boat - no money and 2 owners the old one and us. At this stage we discovered that there was no protection for the buyer, and even less for the poor soul who had signed over his rights of sale to the broker.
Have dealt privately ever since, apart from when we bought a new production boat.
