Broker & Survey But No Comeback

IMO, I want the surveyor to check the hull for damage, osmosis and any other high moisture readings. I'd also want him to assess any cracks to ascertain if they are cosmetic or not.

I'd get an engineer familiar with the engines / drives to check them out, particularly on a sea trial.

In this day and age I'd expect to be photographic evidence of anything found.

I'm quite capable of crawling over the rest of the boat myself to gauge the general condition of fixtures and fittings and to test that all of the boats systems are working / in serviceable condition. Paying a surveyor to do this would seem to be a waste of money.

That is the ideal but getting it not so easy. Far too many people are I am afraid impressed by glossy padded paperwork

I completely agree. Paying £800 to be told the cooker doesn't work because the gas bottle is empty is hardly a task for a surveyor. Having one who's visual senses are actually connected to his brain, let alone his camera is also an advantage.

Surveys are tricky things. What one person is interested in hearing about another is not. You cannot gauge your client’s attitude just from an email or phone call when being engaged on a job. A case of damned if you do, damned if you don’t.
