I have a boat to sell - Achilles 840 - does anyone have any good or bad experiences with brokers, or any other methods of sale?

What is a typical rate of commission, and are there any other 'hidden' charges? - lift-in/out at brokerage etc.

The boat is ashore in Southampton at present.

Thank you.

I've never used a broker. Usually sold thro magazine advert (PBO or YM). But last time I spent £25 on an ad in the boats section of the Autotrader website, and sold the boat in less than a week.
Thus saving about £2,800 in commission fees, which are usually 8% plus vat which comes to 10% of the selling price!

E-bay?

With a sensible reserve, allowing the purchaser time to get survey etc done after auction end. Do the legwork yourself and save a mint in brokers fees for a little time sat at the pc. Add lots of photos - it only costs pence and allows people to see what it's like without travelling miles initially. Bought my last car this way - and I've sold a few too... works well for me anyway!

Martin Bandy, the only broker who I've ever felt was more than worth his commission, but don't know if he would handle something as small. Give him a call if you don't want to do a private sale. He will give you good honest advice about your best options. I first went to him on personal recommendation of an old Devonian seadog who brooked no fools or bullshit, and he more than lived up to the recommendation. Unfortunately, I have to say that with the exception of the guy at Ancasta, Queen Anne's Battery some years ago, who was helpful, the rest have all ranged from a few mediocre to most being absolutely appalling. How they justify 8% +Vat commission I have yet to hear a convincing argument. having recently bought a boat in the States, I have to say the majority of their brokers put our guys to shame for professionalism, customer care and after sales service. Even the worst one I came across was better than the average over here; and they're so much cheaper as well. Likewise their surveyors. Maybe it's because the average American sailor doesn't put up with the bullshit that we put up with from our rip off marine industry. There are obviously too many consumers in the British market prepared to be lazy and waste their money.
