I've a CQR and a Brittany: the Med is becoming more and more grassy and
both these anchors suffer from penetration problems...my next one wil be a
Spade. But 60 kgs is a bit big for SWMBO...
Spades are pricey but everything I've read suggests a major breakthrough.
You probably don't need as much weight (the vital factor is surface area which is
why the Fortress appeared to be revolutionary). Google will get you to Spade's
site. Hylas (regular contributor) designed it but must be on the high seas as unseen in these parts for some time.
I would go for a spade, but at £800, it's a little pricey for me and four or so bits of steel welded together and galvanised. The brittany just looks like it would get through the weed, maybe not, as I've said it may well turn out to be a northill, manufactured by me or for me anyway.
I bought Brittany second time around because it was the cheapest "good" anchor
per kg. (about 60% of CQR). If you're in fabrication mode I'd be sorely tempted to
copy the latest model (seen at Paris BS) called TOP GARD. It starts off on a
base similar to a Brittany: the outside edges of the triangular flukes are parallel
and each has got a 'plough' welded onto it. (I confess I laughed when I saw it, it
looked like a committee effort to combine the CQR and the FOB.) However it was
awarded the show's Prize for Innovation. Easy to fab if you can find the right steel
for the shank. Bit of a pig to stow, handle, etc but maybe you have slaves on
board.
I'm biding my time and planning to get a spade; the character at the So'ton BS last autumn is based in Jersey and can sell them to you there without burdensome VAT and carriage; and a very good excuse to pop over there, anyway. He said there was quite a backlog of orders, so I guess one could order in advance and collect at leisure.
First, the real name is Britany.. with only one "t".
This anchor has been developped by a French sailor "Armand Colin" and is manufactured by PLASTIMO...
For it's characteristics.. Look at the last anchor test published by John Knox in the July and August issue of PBO.. :0(...
About the Topguard.. to receive the innovation price at Paris Boat show.. doesn't means that it works.. In fact this design is nearly the one of the "Pekny" anchor developped 70 years aggo..WHAT AN INOVATION !!!!...
This anchor is half a "flat" anchor like a Britany.. and due to the fact that all these "Flat" anchors are Corkscrewing under load.. the flat fluke extremity feature a "plow" end.. The only problem is that the surface of the plow it self is very small... Does anybody have some experience of this "inovative" product??
I used a Britany for about 10 years which included 2 in Greek waters and can't remember it ever failing apart from the last time it was used and fouled at Santorini - I then had to leave it and 30 metres of chain!
It was 16 kg and used on a 33 footer. It was heavy enough and the flukes sharp enough to penetrate the weed and hard sand without trouble.
If you remember our e-mails in the past on the subject, I've been trying hard to get one in Turkey but will be seeing how well a FOB performs this year.
Regards,
No intention of manufacturing a spade, that would be a bit churlish, but a northill is fair game. I realise you need to make your money, I'm not saying it's not expensive to manufacture, in the size I need, I've measured one and the shank also wont fit in my hawse pipe, so it's definitely out, it may be the "bees knees". I just think it's too expensive for me, I'll struggle on thanks.
I'm still considering what to do, I like the look of the britany (with one T). I've been busy at work, so haven't got round to getting anything yet! I do remember our conversations, thanks for your input.
