British Motor Yacht Show 2017

Not appointment only signs again. The whole idea of this his show is to avoid those !

Düsseldorf took this to a whole new level !

Yes the old Fairline 'by appointment' signs were given an airing at BMYS. I thought they had been consigned to the dustbin of history along with the previous ownership regime but apparently not. Luckily petem was on hand when I arrived at the Sq60 to vouch for the fact that I was of sound mind and kind to small furry animals

In fairness there was no issue getting to look at anything you wished - I think they are customers borrowed boats, but agree the By Appointment is a huge put off. The show add on display are a bit dispointing this year apart from the cars which seem to be growing in number to fill the empty gaps.

Just had a call from Richard Bates (Bates Wharf) and he asked me to mention a few things. Firstly they have a small number (8) of Golden Moments history of Fairline books on the stand. They are a beautiful momento to celebrate Fairlines 50th birthday. If anyone wants one then speak to the Bates Wharf crew. Secondly they have some Fairline range memory stick, ask if you want one.

Finally, everyone was disappointed that the 53 wasn't available. But if anyone wants to view one then there's one passing through Bates in Southampton at the end of this week. Again contact Bates if you want a look. I'm told the quality is absolutely stunning, even compared to the competition. Indeed FL are apparently building their best quality boats ever.

What a great day out despite a touch of wind. Must have been the curried salmon :)

Good to bump into a few forum members and also some non forum friends. The diet took a bit of a day off when Mrs Jimmy the builder produced chocolate cake with a cup of tea. I'm nothing if not polite so ate it making sure not to enjoy myself :)

Ended up in Southampton having an impromptu dinner with the Spanish / Spanish islands forum representatives. What with Jimmy's French connections I felt quite lonely standing up for Blighty :)

Access to boats was unrivalled. Where else can you stand on "your" Sunseeker 95 yacht and chat with the Sunseeker sales representative on "his" neighbouring Sunseeker 86 yacht across the water? Surreal.

How Fairline choose to police access is entirely their choice but if they were hoping to spread the brand they failed. A lack of Squadron 53 was on the tip of everyone's tongue. Boat building is no longer a case of proving you can stick bits of wood together we take that for granted. It's all about volume, design features and innovation. The bar has been set high.

Princess launched their new 62 flybridge which seems huge inside. A dining area opposite the aft galley leading through to the large cockpit made it a very easy boat to imagine using. Some modern styling detail without compromising the Princess DNA. A stylish S60 carried on the theme with a dining area opposite the galley. Next door the already popular S65 represented the S65, 68 flybridge, 75 Yacht golden trio.

I think there's some room for additional boaty / lifestyle exhibitors on dry land though appreciate visitor numbers are modest. I'll be popping back in today on the way back home but for motor boat owners another great show with no entry charge and for the most part incredibly easy access to both boat and business.

Henry, I spotted you but you were deep in conversation with James Barke so I didn't interrupt you. Next time perhaps. If you have time, pop into Bates next week when the 53 is there and have a look.

I was en route to grabbing a drink but kept getting waylayed :)

A sign of the quality of visitor in relation to boat ownership are the number of people you know or recognise walking around. I even bumped into customers from the Porsche business.

You should have said hello.

Are you there again today ?

A wise move on Fairline's part to remove the signs. I think they misread their audience.

Henry :)

We turned up in a friends high powered 2.3hp dingy and abandoned it in the marina. Never had an issues with getting on any of the boats including the S 86

Must say great little boat show even managed to bump into H on the 96 and bored him about Uber.

Yep, if you need to know anything about Uber's licensing shortfalls I am now fully briefed :)

Henry :)

I was on the boat next door and can confirm that I, unintentionally, now fully understand the national aspect to Ubers licensing status.

We don't let Barry out very often these days and limit him to under 4hp.

We've had some very messy boating moments in the distant past, particularly around the Cowes Torquay weekend.

Do you have one Pete? It's a rather good book. They printed it in a limited edition with each one numbered, and very kindly gave me number 78 :)

Am I in it :)?

Miles promised me one but it hasn't found it's way to me yet (partly my fault as I was supposed to be going up there earlier in the year but have failed to do so as yet).

Richard B is sending me one I hope.

Pete
