I find it comical that we failed on several trivial items, including such things as very occasional yellow in the flame on our burners....yet the facts the boat could be full of asbestos, or have a 50p size hole in the hull, seem to not form a part of the BSC test.

Appreciate this is frustrating for you and seems odd but it was explained to me many moons ago when the BSS was first introduced that its primary purpose is to protect others rather than your boat itself. Your boat could have a big hole in the bottom and still get a BSS !
The occasional yellow in the flame suggests a lack of air(oxygen) in the mix which may lead to carbon monoxide being created - NOT good !
As for the asbestos issue (if indeed it is that) I would leave it it as it is and decorate it more to your taste. Its been there over 30 years.
