Hello

Need your advice on Brighton (Lots of IMHO please!)

Ended up taking a look at Brighton marina today. All looks impressive with its shops, restaurant and facilities. I am now seriously thinking of giving up my Broads residence for Brighton. The instant access to the sea is very appealing and the cost difference was only £200.

Anybody have an opinion on Brighton marina?

Thank you in advance.

You need a fairly decent sea-capabale boat from Brighton - none of the protection of the broads of course, but even the solent is very well=protected by comparison. Nice people in the marina, but a bit of a hack to the town - a bicycle wd be handy.

It is a bit of a walk to town, but the whole marina area is up and coming and really quite buzzy these days, and there are frequent buses from outside MacDonalds into town. Sailing -wise, there aren't that many places to go for a day sail, and even weekends are a bit limited; but you can get in and out at all states of tide, although it can get a bit lumpy in the entrance. The yacht club do racing every Sunday and Wed evenings if you're into that sort of thing.
I've got my boat there, because I live 10 minutes away and it means i can pop down whenever I've got a spare hour or 2: I tend to go out for a quick blast or a bit of mackerel fishing, then go to the pictures and/or have a meal and a drink, then sleep on the boat -avoids drink driving or taxi fares. As the previous postersaid, nice people (!) and I get all my books from the book exchange in the ladies loos. The chandlery and services seem good, freindly and efficient. To sum up, the marina is fine, but the sailing possibilities limited. IMHO!!!!
NB just realised you've probably got a MOBO so you have a few more destinations available to you than my 3knots average raggie!

But where do you go? Oh yes, great access to the sea, but it will take you time to get anywhere along rather boring coastline. So, you got Eastbourne and Shoreham - lovely! Ok so you can nip across the Channel and around towards the East - Ramsgate Dover etc. But after a while I think you'll get bored to tears! Plus in certain wind/sea conditions Brighton can be a sod to get in and out of! Mind you, after having been on the Broads myself, Brighton will be really luxury! you can exceed 4 knots!/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

I am in Brighton and love it! if you have a partner (as I do) the shops are really quite good for a shopping spree, the bargains to be found in Asda are numerous. The restaurants whilst some are a pit pricy are not at all bad there is even a weatherspoons (if you can find a barman who is polite that is). And in the summer the Volks railway is a treat to behold )) (anorac) as for the walk into brighton. the bus comes about every ten minutes, if not two togeather and costs two pounds sixty pence for a return ticket. The walk only takes a max of 20 minutes anyway, Oh! the staff are great and the most helpful that you will find in a British marina.

With regards to where do you go I cant see that as a problem, there must be at least a thousand sailing boats mored in the marina! and I only ever hear from non berth holders as to where can you go? the Brighton owners seem to find somewhere. as for me theres Newhaven, Dover, ramsgate, calais st vaast Hornfleur,Cherbourg, Le Harvre, Jersey, guernsey and without the Solent and portsmouth southampton the Medina cowes etc Beauliegh, Poole. Oh I could go on and on. Make the swap move to Brighton!! you will never regret it. unless of course you are disabled and own a motor scooter.

Regards
Rob

I endorse Rob's comments. Having a family of 3 daughters who don't appreciate the family joys of boating I find Brighton ideal. Apart from the marina itself having no locking problems, few tidal draught problems ( for boats under 40ft at least), a good secure marina and helpful staff - I find the free car parking and the marina village's restaurants, bars, supermarket and other leisure/fashion outlets perfect to keep the kids amused while I 'potter'. Yes it can be a bit short of features while at sea and the fishing aint too good (it's not me honest!) but I've been there 6 years and I'm more than happy. The water's also a lot cleaner than many along this stretch of the coast.
