Well, you pays yer money...

Seriously though, our boat is in Brighton - mainly because it's just an hour from our home. As we run our business office from home we use the boat as a getaway as much as a boat. We do use it for that too though, and indeed there are places to go nearby, and it's dead handy for France - no big island thingy to go around see! Might move to the Solent one day, but not yet.

Also, teenage children really like the bigness of the Marina with all it's shops, cinema, bowling etc and Brighton clubs not too far.

A slightly different angle-went to look at a boat there on a wet March Tuesday last year...and spent who knows how long in the traffic jam trying to get out of the place. I shudder to think what it's like on a sunny weekend.
THAT would do it for me.

We were in Brighton from 1999 through to 2007 when I sold the boat. It is cheap - but as others have said, that's because there is basically nowhere to go. There are a ton of shops and restaurants there, and frankly it has become a bit like hard work trying to get from the car park down to the boats on the weekend because of all the dawdling restaurant punters that you have to get past. On the weekends it can be very hard finding somewhere to park.

If you're just dayboating then it's a good, cost-effective choice. If you want to go further afield, then in my opinion Brighton is perhaps not the place to be.

Cheers
Jimmy

Forgot about that one... Question: why are Premiers 2 cheapest marinas so close to each other?

I'll let you know in the autumn (assuming we get a summer this year......). /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

We are based there and as someone said, you pays yer money etc......
Its a case of what you want from your boating. For us its only an hour from home so we can go to the boat most weekends if we choose.
Traffic & parking. We have never had any real problem with parking and never ever any hassle driving in or out using the road over the top of the hill at the back. If on the rare occassion there is a horsy thing on just go another way.
Where to go. There is little or no choice of places close by to go by boat to a cosy pub for a meal and a drink. For us we have booze on board and in the summer go out anything from a mile to 15/20 miles and play at fishing or stay closer in and just drift along in the sun, which is easy cos there is lots of open space. If we want to go somewhere the Solent is around three hours away and the journey there is fun in itself. Looe channel with a bit of sea is character building!! Which brings me on to......
Sea state. Straight out of the marina it is the sea for real and it does not take much of a SW wind to make it mighty unpleasant. That is the biggest factor, the weather has a bigger impact on the number of days you can use the boat because there is no shelter out of the marina.
Facilities. Could not be better, both in the marina and in Brighton. Loads of times we have been to a concert in Brighton then just wandered back to the boat. Loads of eating places, lots of pubs, lots of anything you want really. Brighton now has an up and coming berth holders association who are doing great work.

The future. The biggest issue for the future is the proposed massive re-development which will change the face of the place with high rise developments that when finished will be a nightmare and during construction will be impossible. As usual the local authority have overturned previous restrictions to allow high rise and the whole thing smells really bad. Its been on the cards for years but has met delays and now the current economic climate may delay it for a few more years but for sure when it starts we are out of there!

Thanks for the replies. Nice to hear from some berth holders.

It looks like we will be there soon.

An hour and a half from home is about as good as it gets for us. Cost also came into the decision. Having plenty to do locally and good marina facilities was certainly an appeal.

Hopefully the sea state won't put off the wife and daughter!
