I think I've only eaten in the yacht club there before and we had a reasonably good meal at a reasonable price, if I recall correctly (last year, I think). I don't know if there are any good pubs/ restaurants though.
I'll see you there - we too are going down for Saturday pm. It might not be your kind of thing but the sit-down fish and chip shop right on the waterfront is one of the best chippies in Essex. Best ask the harbourmaster - also one of the best on the coast.
The Brightling Chinese Restaurant is good value but a bit like stepping back in time. You find it by going through the little allleyway beside French Marine Motors and up Tower Street at the back of the alley. On the way you'll pass the Indian Restuarant which is good if you like that sort of food. Further up Tower Street (just before the end) is a restaurant on the right hand side. I think its the White Rose. Doesn't have a licence (or didn't last year) but does very nice mixed cuisine. But, I have heard that it burnt down! I can't remember who told me that but the harbour master will tell you when you berth I'm sure. At the top of Tower Street, turn right for the Chinese Restuarant which is on your right about 100 yards further on.
If the White Rose is open, there is an off licence just round the corner - turn left at the top of Tower Street.
The Fish and Chip shop is good and there is a chinese takeaway just at the beginning of Tower Street.
Bearing in mind the difference in style and market, all do good food.
If you want to book - might help at the Chinese on the Saturday night - its 01206-303466. the 'White Rose' in my telephone book is shown in the High Street and not Tower Street so that might not be the right name - sorry to be useless - anyway the White Rose is 01206-305805. for the classiest meal out, of these, the White Rose is best albeit in a homely sort of way - if its open. Good luck
The White Rose had a fairly serious fire that burnt out the kitchen shortly after a change of ownership. I understand that it is still closed.
There is a new Indian Restaurant just along from the 'Yachtsman' pub. It specialises in Southern Indian cuisine and is VERY good on all counts.
The Brightling Chinese Restaurant is still the best bet by far as regards Chinese food in the town, and mine host Eddie is something of a legend!
For pub grub, The Yachtsman is reasonable, but the best is about a 15 minute stroll to the 'Cherry Tree' in Church Road

Is the Cherry Tree the one where you can go out the back of the pub and look down over fields to the moorings? If so the quality of the beer is excellent. Paul
