Breton Cap?

What's with it with this hat snobbery? Or even inverted hat snobbery?

If a Breton cap fits, wear it! Who gives a rats bottom what anyone else thinks?

:) Truth to tell, I inherited a reefer jacket after the sailing father of a Breton friend, and wear it often (for comfort, and with happy memories) but do feel with its brass buttons it's a bit OTT for the boat. I declined his cap (it was a bit small, IIRC) but with advancing years my Musto caps are perhaps getting a bit Hague-ish.

I'm sure you're right (and thanks for the reassurance) but I was just taking advantage of this rarely assembled sartorial panel - and perhaps gently pulling a leg of the red trousers at the same time! :nonchalance:

Choose your style here - styles to suit all tastes - Breton, Hamburg etc. In wool (melton?), corduroy and leather.

Just one slight niggle - many of the hats they sell should be made from a single piece of felted cloth (trilbys and fedoras for example) but they make them by sewing woollen cloth which makes the hat thicker and leaves seams where the hat should be smooth (and I'm not entirely convinced by their claim that they keep their shape better that way)

(Apparently, from their website, this arose due to the near impossibility of obtaining felt during the communist era)

They may or may not be OK, but a sewn "fedora" isn't a proper fedora when all's said and done. I've looked at numerous sewn so called fedoras over the years at festivals, rallies and craft fairs (all probably obtained from Eastern European manufacturers or the Far East) and none of them has come close to matching a proper moulded felt hat for shape or fit. I've even succumbed and bought one or two only to discard them fairly quickly as unsatisfactory

So my ongoing search for a replacement fedora at a sensible price continues. I could go to one of the London hatters and get the real deal but the prices are eye watering!

I wear a Breton cap when walking the dog and sailing. Having reached that age where my hairstyle resembles a monk's tonsure I find the cap protects my bald patch from both heat and cold. My better half keeps threatening to buy me a new one as she finds the grease, Primocon, and the daubs of red and blue antifouling sartorially unacceptable.

Tilley for the 'summer', Breton for the spring and autumn, and full fur with ear muffs for winter. Wear what you like, not what other think you should or shouldn't.

Plus One.... I think that an ideal boat hat would be a dear stalker : visor for the eyes, tail to protect the nape of the neck and fold down ear covers for cold weather comfort. The whole hat should include Goretex for comfort and waterproofing.
