Bradwell

As a visitor it was a bit annoying having to stump up a deposit for the key to the ablutions or being required to use the somewhat less salubrious facilities in the white tower if needed out of hours

I can't imagine why would they feel the need to ask for a deposit? :D:D

PS If you need one we have a spare in the chart table - but don't tell anyone..

My current marina gives me a number of crew passes so they don't have to feed the pay and display machine, it would put me off there wasn't a similar arrangement at Bradwell.

I let my crew in when they arrive. Such a small part of what a marina has to offer. £1 flat fee to get in.

Yes a loo code would be easier but plenty of places in Holland require you to charge up a card or toggle that has money taken of for loos and showers and then a refund of the unused balance is claimed (or used elsewhere possibly).

Ladies and Gents

Thanks very much for your assistance. You all in similar ways remind me of my summers at this place in the 70's on my fathers westerly. There we where 6 law graduates parents away did we have fun and very fond memories. There was one particular incident in which some very kind people saved me from my parents wrath. Very embarrassing yes but one of the party, how a senior judge I might add, reminded me of it the other day and strangely wishes to return.

Elsie, look forward to seeing you on the East Coast. Apart from the marinas, not much has changed here since the 70s, luckily.

I expect several people here may have occasion to drive (by land) into Tollesbury from time to time.

Next time, you might like to slow down and read the words written in small letters - underneath the word Tollesbury on the official name signs (both sides) at the entrance to the village. Might make you smile........;)

You mean this sign shown here? (You may need to pan round to see the sign)

Is the difference between what I, and others I suspect, am looking at is on Google Earth and several years old whereas you're seeing it in real life. A 'Banksy' addition perhaps?

No. What I see has been there for quite a long time, was still there today, and was definitely not contributed by Banksy or any of his emulators. In fact, if you don't actually read it you wouldn't suspect that it is not part of the official sign. However, if you do read it, you will probably doubt that it was put there by the County Council.

I haven't looked on Google Earth, but if you can see a line of very small text in black letters, same font as the sign, directly below the village name and above the injunction to reduce your speed, that's the one. It's the same on both signs, either side of the road. If not, Google's photo is quite well out of date.

Aug 2010 so more than 5 years out of date and there's no wording to be seen as described. You'll have to let us in on the secret 'cos I ain't driving all the way to Tollesbury to find out!

Google Image capture 2010. No small writing to be seen.

Oh come on. Someone tell what it says for goodness sake:-)

Ok, then. I was just waiting for someone to do some beseeching! :) In fact, very few people know what is written there because nobody gives the sign a second thought as they speed by. Less even than they might if it looked like graffiti. But in fact it looks exactly as though it is an official part of the sign, which is what takes you by surprise of you do take the trouble to read it -
TOLLESBURY
PLEASE SET YOUR WATCHES BACK 200 YEARS

Who wrote it, or when (except, obviously that it more recent than 2010) have no idea. But they did a very professional job. :)
