Bradwell B Nuclear Power Station

Often wondered why big is best.

Nuclear submarines have compact reactors to fit in the confines of a 12 metreish hull. Obviously they wouldn't have the output of "a Hinkley", but you could put umpteen of them on one site. Instantly loads of benefits; economies of scale, easier to build, reduced catastrophic risks, resilience, simplified maintanence, simplified decommissioning, etc. Maybe even design them to be road transportable?

Amazing how we've managed to export all our jobs and now industry to China in exchange for cheap, shiny, tat. Maybe as a result of Covid, we're finally waking up and starting to smell the coffee.

I thought Rolls Royce had be taliking about that option for a while

Like some on here I agree that China should be nowhere near our key infrastructures with immediate effect HS2, 5G (whatever that is),
Look they already 'own; half of Africa and large parts of South America by way of 'helping' those nations that seek it. Their world dominance long term plans following the disregard of agreements made over Hong Kong at the time of its lease expiry shows their duplicity.
I could rant on but will spare others.
As you may have determined I am not keen on them .

Bloody hell! Where have you been?

Just a thought anyone know how tall the existing Bradwell 'blocks are? If the cooling towers are 50-60 metres high that's 160-180 olde english feet, shoul dbe able to navigate by eye to the Blackwater from Southwold.................Result!!!!

45 metres MHWS when built - might be lower now it is mothballed - so the new towers will be 50 to 60 metres high on a 7.4m 'platform' i.e. 57 to 67 metres.
So, one and a half times as big ...... is that something to worry about? I probably live nearer to the power station than anybody else on this forum, and I am not bothered

If the people producing the "consultation" and publicity literature want to gain the confidence of the public they should not show, for example, pictures with the proposed cooling towers appearing to be the same height as the old powerstation building. How can we trust them on everything else?

What persuades you that the height portrayed is not accurate? Have you even bothered to read the consultation document before criticising it? Did you pay any attention to the type of cooling tower selected?

Peter.

Yes I have read the document but could not find the height of the existing building, then saw Tillergirls height comparison. Do you know the height of the new cladding on the existing powerstation building?

A few years ago there were pictures in the local Mersea newspaper showing 4 cooling towers, with the Chinese flag on them and a big yellow discharge. I later found out that they were supplied by BANNG the local protest group.

The Consultation document has two images showing the new Towers in context: one from the West Mersea Boardwalk, the other from East End Road which is from Bradwell village. They are big. Do we like them or hate them? A matter of opinion. Certainly they will be neat.
