Coming back through the solent on Monday morning, sea flat as a pancake, wind a gentle F2/3 and followed this boat at 20/22 knots for four or five miles. It was not hitting a wake or swell but had this continuous bow wave that was often higher than the boat. This can't be a design feature, perhaps a trimming problem? - anyone know what the boat is?

the boat is a Sanlorenzo 62
Sanlorenzo always have this feature of putting higher wave in front, mainly due to central positoned engines, but very solid boats indeed
tough I do think showing your last picture the trim tabs where a bit down
was the swell following?
I am surprised to see one of these in the UK

Looks quite old, maybe late 80's or early 90's. Got a sort of Ferretti look about her.

62 was in production from 1993 up to 2001
but with the winged radar arch as in this picture till 1996

they have very classic lines to them but what is IMO a timeless design

you can have a look here: www.sanlorenzoyacht.com

Well spot, but I wouldn't blame the engines position.
The hull shape and the boat displacement have much more to see with that, afaik.
Most likely, in this case, together with a very bad use of trim tabs.
Here you can see how it should look like - still some spray, but much more reasonable.

Sure its not a 57? I don't know the boats i just know there's been a 57 for sale in the Solent for a while, and i'm guessing there aren't many San Lorenzo's in Blighty

thats the latest 62 in this picture before end production in 2001

the stern bathing platform looks integrated and slope rounded from these far away pictures, the 57 had a squared aft layout with bathing platform attached/integrated to it

also the winged radar arch on the fly was a particular of the 62

If a boats water and fuel tanks are at the rear and they are low or empty it can cause the bow to sit lower than normal in the water causing the front end to plow through the waves.
