Re: Peace, dear boy.......

C'mon Chris, you are the worm that turned. I know you can handle your boat without a Thruster in the worst of conditions so if it fails you can still come alongside. Most 'old salts' don't object to Thrusters as an aid, they just feel that dudes should be able handle their boat first and then have the benefit of one. Similarly with navigation, a GPS is a wonderful aid but Yotties should be able to find their way around without one.

Hi Byron agree that one should be able to do it without and it should not be overused
however just because it is an aid, people should not say it is not necessary, or should
not be used.

Afterall I can park my car without the use of power steering and I can stop it without power
assisted brakes, cos I was driving cars when they didnt have such aids.

However I have not objected to the introduction of such inovations purely on the basis
that "it can be done without them" which is a typical British anti innovation stance.

Hey Clive, i don't think anybody suggested you shouldn't have them, just intended as humourous replies. I would certainly fit one and use it, and as people have said I would rather a novice had one so that it keeps them out of trouble. But like anything it should be used appropiately, to follow your automotive analogy, I would liken it to people who drive with their front fog lights on only, instead of dipped headlights.

When I was a Skipper we didn't have such toys, we used tugs but then only if we had to because of the expense. Anyways parking a 28,000 slab sided vessel against a wind with no second chance is somewhat harder than a 20-50' cruiser that you can march sideways with judicial use of the engines.
