O.K. so I am a little bored this afternoon so thought I'd try a little "what is" so what is this and how would you use it?

I don't use it often but it is an indispensible piece of kit in my tool box.
Lord help me - I must be really bored....... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

This piano tuners string tensioner looks remarkably like that which was formerly the property of Professor Grip Pipe Thin.

It was last seen in the possesion of Neddy Sea-goon who stole it from Moriarty.

How did it come into your hands 'cliff' ?

It is now clear that 'cliff' is solely a pseudonym.

I hereby identify you as Neddy Sea-goon.

Do you admit to the impersonation ? /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

That Sir ,is a wonderful piece of kit ,an absolutely indespensable, don't- leave-home-without-it, manual dexterity applicator or MDA ,not to be confused with PDAs or Blackberries which are far too Johnny-Come- Lately....
Lets see now ,er what is it? Did it start life attached to an old Flintlock pistol then.Maybe for calibrating the powder/range before you drilled the enemy with it ? No probably not . Is it a lumphammer in disguise?

Obviously it has been adjusted and adapted somewhat to adjust piano wire and was originally as we all know a third generation discomeknockeraetor. What is giving me some trouble however is the difference between the mk1 and the mk2 is only in that the mk1 had a leather covered knob whereas the mk2 was simply polished wood for production reasons.

Do you have a view of the reverse to confirm ? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Reverse side says" The LS Starrett Co. Athol Mass USA" There are no other markings or graduations.

it is in fact a speed counter 0-100 in either direction. One of our mechanics was looking over my shoulder as I looked at this and turned up with one a few moments later. He didn't actually know what it was for, but was under his bench where all his other calipers etc are kept in their boxes.

So you have a dodgy mechanic then - actually counts up to 5000 revs and is used to check shaft speeds and hence calibrate tachometers connected to the "W" terminal of alternators fitted to diesel engines - great wee piece of kit
One rev of shaft=1/100 rev outer dial
100 revs of shaft= 1 rev outer dial = one division on inner dial
5000 revs shaft=50 revs outer dial = 50 divisions inner dial = one rev inner dial.

Oh yes and it does work either direction

So what is your "oddball" tool........

Can't afford an electronic one so I'll have to stay with the old mechanical one. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I didn't recognise what it was for, but the name L.S.Starrett Co is well known to me.
They were one of the finest makers of micrometers and prescision tools available, along with another US company Brown and Sharpe.
Sorry to say our Moore and Wright UK manufacturers could not match the quality of them.
I still have my Starrett mic from my early toolroom days.

Got one in the shed much similar but in steel, it is as dylan points out a rev counter for checking the speed of lathes, drills, etc. From days of yore when such machinery had flappy leather drive belts, and things. Expect its similar to mine predecimal and system international. Suppose it could be converted into a wind speed gauge by attaching some spoons to the spindle and recalibrate.

Thats easy Cliff.....dont fool these people with technical data as we all know what it really is...........its an alchohol strength testing devise as pinched from Scotts bar last Friday night....really you should be ashamed of your self showing it on this forum when it is the front page picture in this weeks Ayrshire Post.............son your Knicked!!!!!

Paul.
