Boatyards around Portsmouth?

I'm not sure what hoist kit they have - presumably pretty good - Gosport BoatYard have always seemed a good lot, they were always helpful when I had one of their deep water moorings for a summer - and I've always heard positive things about them from chums there as well as folk on these forums.

As I say I'm unsure of their shoreside stuff but having dealt with them I'm certain they'd be able to get hold of the right people.

An alternative to Portsmouth, if the boat can make it, is Thornham Boatyard / ' marina ' in Chichester.

It would require good timing tide-wise ( and frankly the ' marina ' is a mud bound effort ) - but once ashore they are an excellent yard with all sorts of skilled people right there or on the end of a phone - I've known friends with boats there and been very impressed by the service.

I don't know where you are based Snooks but it might prevent an early stroke dealing with Gosport traffic !

There are a fair few. I've used Trafalgar wharf, wicormarine, port solent and portsmouth marine engineering. All have the hoisting and yard facilities that you need. I guess, phone around and find the best price is the right way to go.

Depends. If you are talking about a DIY job talk to Butch at Quay Lane Boatyard. Its a small, very friendly and reasonably priced yard. Even if you don't want to do it yourself, Trevor who works for him may do it for you. If not he has no problem bringing contractors in. Its worth driving down there and talking to him personally.

We've been at Wicormarine for 16 years. Happy to recommend them for either a DIY job or using a contractor. Give Scott a ring to talk over the options.

Wicor was very happy to lift me out recently for a prop shaft seal replacement and flexible about re launch etc

Our boat was at Wicor for 5 yrs, until we got a semi tidal berth at Universal. I would recommend them, and indeed if we ever need to be out of the water for more than a couple of weeks for maintenance, I'd happily go back there.

Wicor do a good summer deal, lift scrub, 2 weeks ashore, re launch £250. They are Ok with self maintained boats or bringing in contractors, and have a recommended contractors list.

I had new seacocks fitted by Gosport Boat Yard and they have also done some minor fibreglass work for me. It has all been to a very high standard.

Chris and his team at Gosport Boatyard have just done the cutlass bearing for me and I am rather grateful I didn't try and do it between the tides because the old one just refused to come out. Good team.

Thanks for all the recommendations.

If I had the time I'd give it a go myself, but that road veers to a summer ashore; I'm tied up with getting the Tech section of Yachting Monhtly out of the door every four weeks. Also the editor is off up north in his Twister so the magazine is already a crewmember down.

So I'll be looking for someone to do the work for me.

Thank again

G

Another vote for Gosport Boat Yard, used them for more than 15 years, annual lift out through to major (and I mean major, £18k insurance jobs) always been reliable high quality service.
