I'm interested to know what being charged for electricity in boatyards. In the past I've come across completely free to a standard electricity unit charge and even a standing charge plus unit charges which I thought was a rip off. My experiences might be out of date now as I haven't been in a yard for some years. Maybe the rip off is now the norm?

No charge in my yard but that's in France! Surprisingly, nobody seems to abuse the facility and all unplug their cables when they are not on board.

Actual electricity price is subject to a legal maximum, but yard can apply a service charge. So overall cost depends on yards policy on service charge plus volume used if service charge is fixed.

Therefore you will find much variation from yard to yard.

I was once charged €780 for a few months of electricity, no meter just a bald assertion that it had been checked....

eventually had to do deal to get boat out of yard, now in different yard........ further from home but less than 1/3 the price for storage and a nominal figure put against power...

Re boatyard electricity price....Mine charges £3 a day - which is what several of the marinas in the Solent charge for overnight visitor berthing for elec.

£3 per day seems very high , or I am I out of touch .
We live on the boat full time , I put £10 on nine days ago for ele And water , since then we filled up with300 lts and had the ele on 24/7 , when I looked yesterday there was still £3 on the meter .
As at yet we not running any fan heaters , so I. Guess it won't last so long once we do .
But £3 a day ?

£3 pounds appears to be the going rate for those places that charge (Bembridge charged me this amount at the weekend). My experience is that normal usage such as running the battery charger, fridge, etc. uses around 20 pence worth.

Haslar only charges if you are fortunately enough to own a boat 20m or longer

Shotley Marina on the East coast :

Resident Berth Holders Quarterly Charge – £18.75. Unit Charge £0.1219

Visitors £2.75 per day

I stayed onboard full time for six months from April this year and used a massive £15 worth, plus the standing charge :)

Well here are the charges for Ardfern on the west coast of Scotland -

ELECTRIC CHARGES
Winter Day Rate £4.00 per day
Summer Day Rate £3.75 per day
1 Month Standing Charge Rate £13.00
6 Month Standing Charge Rate £55.60
12 Month Standing Charge Rate £98.95
Cost per unit used £0.21 per unit

Makes some/ most of the charges above look cheap!

Across the hill at Craobh, the monthly standing charge this summer was around £6 or £7 a month and about £0.12 per unit. As usual, for me, the standing charge come to more than the cost of the units used. Shame, last year there was no standing charge.

You sure that unit cost is correct ?

Might be different rules in Scotland, but here in England they are not allowed to overcharge for the units.

I was going to point that out.

I'm particularly interested in standing charges because we are in effect being asked to pay for something that's essential to the owner of a boat in a yard. Where would it end? Water charges? Breathing air charges?

I had this argument with a boatyard in 2014. They were very good about it - clearly werent aware of the rules which are that they have to charge the price they pay themselves both per unit and standing charge. Whats more under HMRC notice 701/19 of August 2012, supplies of less than 33kwh per day are de minimis and should be charged at the reduced vat rate of 5% and not the 20% that my boatyard was applying.
