As a middle aged project I built a plywood ocean going YM Waterwitch. Big sister to the Eventide. When I was dallying in the USA working at Defence and Space my then wife, back in the UK, sold it to get it out of the Garden. Much much later I was strolling along the Worsley canal with my new wife when I saw the boat chugging along with the mast on deck. How about that for a coincidance?

Mirror Dinghy 40 years ago then these in the last 15 years...

Drascombe Longboat
Folksong 26
Drascombe Drifter
Cornish Crabber 24
Drascombe Coaster
Marieholm International Folkboat (IF Boat)

Forum member 'Doug748' put me onto IF Boats when I joined the forum as I was looking at Folkboats but could not afford a GRP one so bought a copy Folksong 26. I really wanted a gorgeous IF Boat however.

Forum member 'Jemm' put me onto my IF Boat this year that was just advertised on a sailing club site. Sailing doesn't have to be expensive. It was 6K, with 18K being spent no it in the last 10 years... new inboard, sails, interior revamp, etc. I have bought a trailer for it and keep it at home which is really convenient and free. Absolutely love the boat, beautiful, simple, strong, easy to sail and such a worldwide respected boat with good enthusiast back up for parts and advice. They recently started making them again to add to the 4000 already sold.

I have a vague recollection of looking at that when advertised for sale late 1997 or early 1998. But I could be mistaken.

We bought her in December 1999 from Port Solent if that rings any bells, at the time she had a bolt on in mast reefing system which we later removed in favour of a slab reefed main.

Thanks, certainly the right neck of the woods.

We looked at a lot of Hunter 27/272/273/265s at the time. The one that still stands out in my mind was at Hythe marina where the owner had apparently chosen the 'inboard/outboard' set up when ordering it and then upgraded to an inboard later. The outboard was still there!

Morning,

I am looking to purchase a Sadler 290 and searching for any info and history, I believe it is hull No. 4. I found the YW write up, very impressed, I would appreciate any info or what to look for would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks

Hi Martyn, I have owned my 290 no.3 from new (2004) and have no major issues to report. If you are looking at no.4, I guess it will have the Beta 20 like mine. I changed the raw water skin fitting for a larger diameter bronze inlet to allow greater flow of cooling water. At 16 years old, the headlining is starting to get the usual droop in the aft cabin and forepeak (later boats had moulded headlining). Look for any leaks around the windows and any subsequent staining. I re-bedded one saloon window - very easy job. My boat was originally underpropped so changed the pitch when the 2 blade folding prop became corroded. (was 14x9 now 15x10) Much better motoring performance. Sailing performance is indeed still superb for a 29'-0", 5 ton bilge keeler. You should expect to pass many 30-36' fin keel boats but with slightly less pointing ability.

Can't really think of anything else, but if you have any questions, feel free to send a pm.

At school sailed 27' Whalers, 14' RNSA, Firefly and Bosun
Teaching sailing before Uni I had access to everything from Mirrors to a Tempest but my favourite was a Shearwater cat
Boats I've owned
About 6 Tornados - bit difficult to be sure with various new hulls and rigs
Laser (4676?) and sailboats for fun during Tornado time
Mirror, Optimist and Topper for the kids
Dart 18 no 2233
Hustler 35
Dart 18 no 610
Hurley 24
Moody 33Mk1
Moody 44 is present boat
Loved every one of them but the Moody 44 has been home for the last 4 years and spoils me as a cut above all the other cruising boats

I've sailed many of those on your list, and even owned one of them (mk1 M33).

However, when I was about ten years old, the Monatagu whaler was absolutely my dream ship.

Sadly, to this day, I've still never sailed one (though my Dad did have a converted 32 foot naval cutter for many years).

Thanks for the reply,

Hull #4 not happening but very fortunate to be getting hull #48 Deep Thought very soon, appears to have some leaks from above but otherwise in good order. I have not worked out how to PM?
