Some idiot in Dartmouth has let off flares and set a local house alight, then he resisted arrest from his boat, his girlfriend also arrested. No bail so his Christmas will be in a cell.

Idiots and flares (and probably achohol) just do not mix.

You do get them. I was up on the Downs new years eve 99/00 with the wife. Loads of people there all having a good time drink, music, dancin' that kinda thing. Stroke of midnight and all the fireworks went up. The sky was all different colours at once. Then the sky went red. Some twat had let off a red parachute flare. I watched as it floated back to earth landing in the middle of a crowd of people. A rally smart move that was. Luckily the people could move away from it. Its amazing the temperature those things burn at.

<No bail so his Christmas will be in a cell> sounds like a result for common sense. Despite all the publicity about use of flares only for emergency, and the danger of their use on land, the message still does not appear to be getting through to the idiots who do this. I flamed a guy on another forum last week when he started boasting of using his miniflares from his backyard.

I believe that HMCG and RYA have to take a more proactive role here and set up a lot more training courses for people at the end of the season, so they can safely use their flares that will be out of date by the start of the next season.
