Having once owned a succession of Triumphs I can say I am grateful for the oil-tightness and reliability of modern marine engines.

Running and, more important, keeping running, the kind of car most of us seem to have had as our first one was good training too. Unfortunately, modern vehicles discourage that sort of thing - it's an hour's work before you can even see the engine. OTOH, they don't need you to as much. Mine has warning lights for all the things that I used to have to check like oil and levels and tyre pressure so, apart from topping up the (huge) screen washer, I rarely open the bonnet these days
