An observation from these forums maybe totally erroneous but those with a history of fiddling with motorbikes seem to be handy looking after a boat.

So am I?I am living proof of the unreliability of your hypothesis.
Having once owned a succession of Triumphs I can say I am grateful for the oil-tightness and reliability of modern marine engines. If you can manage a British bike then you will be at home with a Seagull
When my screen wash runs out, I know it's time to book in for a service?.Running and, more important, keeping running, the kind of car most of us seem to have had as our first one was good training too. Unfortunately, modern vehicles discourage that sort of thing - it's an hour's work before you can even see the engine. OTOH, they don't need you to as much. Mine has warning lights for all the things that I used to have to check like oil and levels and tyre pressure so, apart from topping up the (huge) screen washer, I rarely open the bonnet these days
