Completed the sale of the boat yesterday and now for the first time in seven and a half years we are boatless, and it feels.......................OK.

We marketed the sale ourselves using a website and google ads (thanks to MartynK for his invaluable assistance) and an ad in Boats and Outboards. Sorted all paperwork and money transfers without need for a middleman. We also marketed the boat at a value that was interesting enough to attract attention and when it came to the deal took a realistic view of what the real market price was. Result was a private sale achieved in less than 6 months to a family who we know will appreciate the boat as much as we have.

We will miss Mallorca but were ready to try something else so there were no sad feelings about her going.

She has been a great boat for us, allowing us to live our Med dream (I won't be changing my user name) and meet lots of nice people some of whom I am happy to say have become good friends.

I don't know what part boats will play in our future plans but at the moment we are looking forward to a bit more travelling and seeing new places. I'm sure I will continue to follow everyones adventures on here (but I must admit I dont like the new forum software and visit the site less reguarly than i used to).

I do know that owning a boat and meeting fellow boaters has been one of the best experiences we have had and I hope you all continue to get as much satisfaction from your boating as we did

Well Martyn - you and me both. I remember the "med dream" being a bit shakey for you some years back (if I am right?) but I am glad its all worked out and that you've enjoyed the dream! What made you sell her in the end?

There are times that I miss Coney Island and times that I don't. There are times when I say I am going to get back into boating and then dismiss it. I did say to myself that, after 9 years of boating, I would give it 2 clear years before making a decision.

For me it was usage. The kids had grown up and gone to Uni, we had 3 years poor weather on the bounce (something that you wouldn't have had in the Med!) and we weren't getting the usage that we wanted.

So when you say "travel around a bit" where do you mean?

Good luck with whatever you decide and I still think the Med is the place to be, and SWMBO and I are plotting our escape from Britain once the "Uni" bit is done and dusted.

Main reason for selling Dave was that we wanted to do other things, see a bit more of the world etc.

We did consider bringing her back to the UK as a "weekender" but frankly the British climate didn't appeal.

Yes, we did six years in the Med, the first was indeed very stressful, due to untrustworthy people as much as anything, but once we had worked things out, and got a good reliable engineer the rest have been great.

Great memories but time for fresh experiences.

I hope you do still hang around here, you are one of the nice guys. Hope we bump into each other at a boat show again sometime.

Well done on the sale Martyn and good luck with the next chapter. It was nice to meet up, when I finally managed to boat across the Mallorca this summer after 5 years of never going West of Marseille! If you guys find yourself in Antibes ever, do drop by. And keep your ICC up to date, because if you ever need a med boating fix and there are no forumites to catch a ride with (an unlikely eventuality, I know!) you can always just rock up and rent a 175hp x 20foot day boat in pretty much any port in the south of france for €400 a day if you have ICC

Your other post above has made me realise how time flies. I can remember well your posts on here about outdrive problems and useless mechanics, but I'm staggered to see that was 5-6 years ago. Sheesh, where did all that time go?
 
Thanks jfm, it was nice to meet up with you too.

Fully intend to keep the ICC up to date for exactly the reason you suggest and we will certainly be around to see if you we ever get SoF way.

Yup, six years in Alcudia of which all but the first have given us special memories, who knows if we will go back to boat ownership but I do know that if we do we will be back in the Med.

In the meantime I'll look forward to following more of your "epic" summer cruises on here - as you seem to be one of the few posters who actually go anywhere! - Come to think of it one of the few who actually own a boat

One of the most memorable things on the forum in all my time has been the way forumites rallied around in Callums early days. Best wishes to you all but especially the forums "wee mascot".

BEWARE!! We once decided to get out of boating, and sold up. We bought a new car and a beautiful twin axle caravan, loaded with aircon, the lot. Our first trip away was to Brittany, where we spent virtually every day ................visiting harbours and marinas looking at all the boats.

We sold the 'van 6 months later, went to the boat show and bought a new boat!! So, be absolutely sure you have finished with boating!
 
Congratulations, Martyn, or is it commiserations? A bit of both I guess. Seems like all we Majorcan forumites are fleeing the island. SWMBO and I often discuss whether we should do less boating or even no boating in favour of more travelling. So far the boat is winning, just. A boat in the Med is a big tie because, as you know, you feel you have to spend any available holiday time on it which means that holidaying elsewhere goes out the window. I hope you find what you are looking for and keep popping back into the forum

We had the same debate for the past couple of years, last year the boat won, this year it didn't.

Good luck in Sardinia, the Spanish authorities are getting what they deserve really.

I'll still be hereabouts and looking forward to hearing about Sardinia. If you find a chateaubriand as good as Meson Dulcina make sure you post about it :-)
