When I first went to sea 40 years ago I heard all the superstitions.
Then MOD prevailed, I was sent to sea on Fridays, Sundays, on the 13th, with Vicars and even with women. My wife and children have sailed with me, I have sailed on renamed ships,
And 'touch wood' I am still here.
I've seen lots of green painted boat, I'm fairly sure the Sarchi & sarchi yacht is green, I wouldn't say their exactly unlucky with the dosh they have got!!
Well I just had to touch 'cold iron' as a cure for that word. 'Underground racehorse', if you must.
Unfortunate in this part of the world is no pasties on board, and I've seen a crewman eat one on the quay at 6 am rather than leave it behind. Sometimes OK if you bite the corners off to let out the wind.
The cure for whistling is the same as in the theatre, turn round three times and spit on the deck.
Never stick a knife in a hatchboard.
If a dead body is found you must find some soil to put on it, or you will be next. Unfortunate that spuds are sold so clean these days.
Stick a knife in the mast to get some wind.
Dunno, but Brittany Ferries, crewed by Breton sailors can not sell Duracell Batteries aboard - because of the 'rabbit' logo! The deck hands refused to load ship when they discovered it in an onboard shop some years ago.
