Boating aspirations?

A kind of light-hearted follow-on from Sandyman's 'Mobo Snobs' thread - of which I found a bit negative but with some amusing comments...

If you were to gain (legally - via a lottery win or inheritance etc) some significant money - for arguments sake, say £1M but for those with a £1M yacht already, say £10M etc :), how would it affect your boating?

Would you simply buy a bigger boat? If so what? Would you retire and just have time to do more boating perhaps? Would you live aboard, emigrate somewhere warmer, build your own or even sail around the world? How do you think (honestly! :rolleyes:) it would change your current circle of friends - would it make any difference?

To start things off, I'd probably take some time out to fix mine up, pay for the bits that I probably can't do very well myself (:o) and get a marina berth rather than trailing. I probably wouldn't change either boat (both projects), but sadly as a bit of a hoarder, would probably acquire a number of further 'projects' (and end up single... :eek:).

My circle of friends would probably remain similar, but a number of newcomers would probably join them offering "great projects" for sale... :rolleyes:
 
OK - I'll bite...

Rather than buy one ridiculously big boat, I would probably buy two or three modest boats - mid thirty foots - and have them moored in nice marinas - one somewhere in England, one on the Med and perhaps one in Florida.

That way I can sail in different places without all the grind (and expense, in the case of a MoBo) of getting there...
 
Might need a little more than £10 million, but I would go for two similar 75 foot sailing yachts. One to be based in the Med and one for the Caribbean as suggested above. Both crewed, naturally. Then you can let your friends use one while you are on the other, or sometimes get them all together and have a monster party.

(And to add to other threads, the one lent to friends will have to wear a red ensign, whilst "mine" would of course be wearing a warranted blue.
Can't comment on which anchor we would use, as I have no idea what size Mansons go up to. Clearly would NOT be a bendy Rocna.)

This 'what if' passed thru my mind a few times and I don't think I'd harbour any aspirations of a 'gin palace' (probably coz I'd be too scared to drive anything that big tbh) but i would certainly buy an SC35 or the next one up and probably nearly new as as opposed to brand new as I can't justify the immediate depreciation I would suffer. I would certainly also buy a second home either with own mooring or close to the marina. My circle of friends will always be my circle of friends come what may and if I pick up a few more along the way then great but somehow don't think that bigger boat means more friends altho i guess i would venture further afield with a bigger boat so who knows?. The only thing I can say would probably change is my wardrobe! Sad but alas true.
 
Even if I had lots of money, a boat larger than say an SC42 wouldn't be that attractive because it's the largest size I would feel comfortable helming and manoeuvring in the marina (I'm sometimes single handed).

Having said that, I would probably buy two of them, and ask JFM's advice on which part of the Med to locate Flower Power II.

A Jag XKRS in the garage, an offer on the bigger house round the corner with the better view, and that would probably keep me going for a bit.

I think I can safely say that my wardrobe would remain very much the same.

+1 on the Jag - have had a few over the years but all old ones! XJS and XJ40 Sport were the best, but the former started falling apart and I stupidly sold the latter... :(

I also have to confess that I'm with Lisilou on the togs - but only because my wardrobe's a little worn out/neglected of late! :o

I was really more curious about impact of such an event on fellow forumite's boating activities (it is a boating forum after all :D)

Ok ok I would charter a biggun with a skipper and go round the world as long as I could 'drive' some of the time.

If the biggun's a Mobo then most of that'll go on fuel then... :eek::D
 
Oh I like these sort of dreamy threads....

I wouldn't have given the option of £10m, that's just not necessary.... well perhaps for some. But us mortals a 1m lump sum gives us plenty to dream about. So please can I have one of these, the change to go on berthing and fuel.. Any bigger and I won't be able to get in the places I know and love...

It would affect my boating enormously..............I'd actually be able to buy one:D
 
i would import from the states a 42ft v hull fountain with serious engine power and serious noisy exhausts, to wake every one up at the week end. and then fill the boat with avery possible boating electronics, top of the range garmin equipment and off course a cracking stereo with dolby surround sound from the 42 plazma in the cabin.:D:D:D:D

Ok who"s got a million quid to lend me desperate now, :( please any one :(:( any one out there :(:(:( hhhhhheeeeeellllllllppppppp i want a fountain

With all that gear installed, we'll be outrunning you in our 35 foot sailing yacht! :-)
 
I'd be happy with a mid 40s FB, SWMBO on the other hand would need to take half the family with us so we'll need a decent win on the Euro to get the Sunseeker 80, but more for the diesel to fuel the buggering off part of the dream

Mates are mates and always will be and won't be anywhere long enough to make new 'proper' mates. Wardrobe will still consist of shorts and tatty Floyd and Sabbath t's :)
 
I'd buy one of these http://www.nordhavn.com/models/120/ and go off boating around some of the world's remoter regions in total luxury for a few years but I think I'm going to need more than £10m to buy and run one of these babies:)

Mike... well I know I said 1m will do... but if someone was feeling generous I might swap the Hardy 42 for a new Nordhavn 72...., just over half the size of the 120, but still lovely.. and I think I could just make it up to Mercury with that! :D
 
i do love dreaming on a friday!

seeing as i have always wanted the boat i now have im not sure i would buy anything different at the moment!

how about using the money so i can work 4 days a week rather than 7 and then get more time to use the boat??
