I have been reading the thread about paddlewheel problems.
Until recently when I got my new (to me) boat all my experience was with conventional prop shaft boats. My boat has saildrive so paddlewheel and prop wash are minimal. I used to find both effects quite useful boathandling 'tricks'.
Are there any useful tricks for saildrive ?

But both are still there ...... so whats the problem ?

The only real difference being that often the saildrive is more forward on the boat than a conventional shaft drive, giving less leverage for transverse thrust etc. and reduced wash once it gets to that rudder far aft.

But I can assure you they are still there ......

????????????????????????????
Dunno about you, but most of the boats with saildrives that I've taken out have very little paddlewheel effect, as the prop is so close to the pivot point of the boat. maybe it depends on the boat, but if tom52 says his boat has little paddlewheel effect, I guess we'd better believe him!

I though that this was almost always the case, as lack of paddle wheel effect is always quoted as one of the advantages of sail drives (as well as the real reason of them being cheaper to instal.)

I wasn't disbelieving anyone ..... but it will still be there in some small manner. I agree that generally it is an advantage to lose it, but there are also cases when berthing / departing owe graet store to the effects.

Seems I'm apologising to many at the moment - must be my hangover and cold from Christmas / New Year !!!!

Sorry, that was my hangover making me sound grumpy. I was only trying to express surprise that some boats with saildrives still exhibit useful (or annoying) amounts of paddlewheel effect.

Agree that padlewheel effect can be useful, but I'd love a boat without any. Its so nice to be able to put a boat in reverse and for it to stop in a straight line, as opposed to mine, where reverse only has the effect of causing the stern to shoot of to port, while the boat keeps on charging ahead without stopping. Its given a few owners heart attacks as I've narrowly missed T-boning their pride and joy!
