Boat Valuations

A valuation survey - most marine surveyors will do one for you and it's a lot cheaper than a full condition survey.

Otherwise spend several hours searching through Apolo Duck and the Yachtmarket looking for similar boats...

Not worth getting a so-called professional valuation, as all they will do is what you can do yourself, which as already suggested look at what other people are asking. In old low value boats like yours most are sold privately without going through brokers so there will be little firm evidence of what prices they actually fetch. Other peoples' asking prices are the best guide adjusted by how you judge the condition of yours compared with others on offer.

An insurer said they'd need a valuation to support the agreed value quotation and suggested asking a broker to look over the boat. I noticed Griff Rhys-Jones did that in the episode of Three Men In another Boat where he had his boat valued.

Has the advantage that it doesn't cost anything.

The real value of a boat

Ah the real value ultimately is what someone will pay for it.
As said you need to compare your boat with others in the market. Remembering that they will ask for more than they will get. People have inflated ideas of what their beloved boat is really worth. Then you need to consider what similar sized boats to yours are going for.
In other words you put yourself in the place of a purchaser. Is your boat of a type that is highly sort after or just another type?
Then what boat your personal circumstances? do you need the money or need to get the boat gone to reduce storage costs? Ultimately if you have the time try it at a higher price then go down if there are no bites. But I am sure you know all this! Good luck. I can't think of anything worse than trying to sell your boat. olewill

Suggest you do a little comparative research: then talk with a broker or two suggesting you like this boat and asking what you'd have to pay for one these days - this way you will get a price range.

Then spend the rest of your time polishing and making good to support an asking price at the top end of that range. Remember first impressions.....!

Now is the time to sell. Conditions will not improve over the next 6-9 months - but you knew that anyway!

Agree entirely. Always found it best to advertise at an attractive price rather than mess around for months before having to drop it anyway. If you take that approach you risk people thinking " its been on the market for months and not sold - must be something wrong with it. Wont bother to look".

I've seen boats advertised for 5 years on the trot because a stubborn man had a daft idea of value.

Professional valuations are based upon the vessel's actual condition, its specification and the current market conditions. Surveyors or Brokers can offer this service, but depending on the value of the vessel, guidance can be given on pre-sale preparation that can save you money. Yes many will argue that common sense will pervail, but looking at the presentation of some boats on the market I beg to differ.

It is very hard to put a price on things you have bled and sweet over,I do understand the value of used items, Luckily for me I do have the option of cheap storage and a cheap local drying mooring instead of my current location.

Money wasnt really the issue, I want to upgrade at some point but finding time to sail with work comitments at the moment it very difficult.

I will have a good think :/
