Boat Transport Med To Channel

wild gues is er 4grand. or mebbe five these days.

I bet it would be cheaper from a french compnay, perhaps, who didn't have to pay overnight rates etc to brit drivers? Praps ask the yard, or google for "camion bateaux routier transport" or suchlike - loads of results. You may need some french though.

plenty of french speakers about on the forums like my swmbo who could take a look if you got the list down to one or two. Plenty of online translation engines that will take a website page and translate it, like altavista babelfish, and give rough translation.

Indeed have a look at my web site - lists UK transporters and French transporters - at a guess you are looking at 2K for the trip.

It will certainly be cheaper if you get the boat to a French port and use a French transport company - Just need to make sure the French marina has a travel lift and small crane for the mast - Le Havre, Cherbourg etc - email me if you want help on the French side - Let me know which French port.

regards

Michael

Think ahead myself about the return journey . A lot of yachts are transported from Empuriabrava , near Figueres, just south of the French border on the Med side(bay of Roses). A quote to bring the load up to the Bilbao area might be more reasonable. You then have the West Coast of France to enjoy, taking extra care with the first bit as Ports are scarce. Its just that the fun is in cruising, and you could leave the boat safely in many ports such as La Rochelle and Port Crousty, or cheaper ones also! If the boat is new to you a cruise to Empuriabrava first might be just the tonic! The staff there are really nice as are all the people of the area, great chandlers and services, I stayed for two years and cruised the Balearics, and back.Best of luck with new vessel!

Try Chantier Fluvial, 23 Quai Jean Moulin, 82100 Castelsarrasin, France.

Best phone number is to Joint Proprietor Veronique, who speaks some English
00 33 (0)6 22 61 55 12,

I used them in August this year and found them to be very reasonably priced and very careful.

It also pays to think about where to load. Some marinas are much better equipped, easier of access and more reasonably priced than others, so it is worth covering a few miles to enjoy the benefits..

If I can tell you anything else, pm me and I will give you a contact number.

You will also find info about his oputfit at www.colvicwatson.co.uk

pp 4 and 6.

Thank you one & all for the reply’s, just to explain...

I may (hope to) be involved in a nice long contract in the West Country, which should see me through almost up to retirement. I can probably swing most of the cost of a Marina onto the company, in lieu of a flat/hotel, therefore being a great opportunity to bring Shady Too back here & get her ready for the big adventure sometime down the line,. …Good Plan! Good Plan!……..
However the downside is I will not have that much time too sail her back, even if you calculate in say 2 week hols, it isn’t going to get me from South of France back to UK around Spain hence the query re transport.

Some really great ideas though & the sugestion from Polly/Paul appeals as I know the area around Figueres very well, as we used to live in Estartit.

Thanks again.

You could use the canals if you leave before the rains!

Port St Louis not to far from you!

Valence or if you make good progress--

--Vienne (theres a free port very safe no shops near by though)

Chalon-sur-soan (free mooring on the town key)

Vinneuf (end of the Burgudy canal)

Paris

Rouen (mast up used to be free for the night)

Le Havre and later Home!

Altogether perhaps 10days could be quicker but if you have 14 days and if your well prepared dont need to shop no sightseeing, then you can do it!

Allow 2/3 days for the Burgundy canal the locks are automatic so if they dont have a brekdown(very rare) you can be through in a day, day and half depending how determind you are!!

Just to put my oar in, we are currently in Avignon, having come down through the canals, our draft is 1.5m but we meet a boat in Le Havre who had got their from Port Saint Loius using the Marne, who had a draft of 1.9m although he did admit to touching the bottom once or twice. If you have the time go for the canals, it can be done in 5 wees provided you do not want to stop to much along the way.

I agree 5 weeks is incredably fast, i would and have taken once more than a year from Le Havre to Port St Louis, But it can be done in a week!! really i did say it would be hard!

If you use the canal of Burgundy with all its locks you have more than 1.80m all the way in fact from the Soan to Paris when you run aground its just normal as the parking areas tend to have more variable depths. But with 1.80m as lond as your going along the chanel you wont ground.

Just now with the automatic locks you can keep going all night if you wish

Hi Trouville!

"Just now with the automatic locks you can keep going all night if you wish"

That's a new relaxation of the regulations then. I understood that there was no navigation on any of the canals after 1930. Has that now changed?

Re: BUT

Ahh! well yes! umm 18.30? is that 6.30pm? Well it DOSE say something like that! But theres almost to no traffic at all and i found that just a couple of weeks ago after 6.30pm there wasent any traffic at all!! Then you can travell without a wait!

The power isent turned off in the locks and i sometimes have a problem readind instructions!

I wouldent recomend doing the same on the soan but thats open longer and far less locks!

We slowly went along the canal at midnight it was really gteat! almost no fishermen

In fact if your not a huge barge zooming along yourll be ok but imagin barges comeing from opposite direction after 20.00 haveing had there evening snack bottle of wine and several digestives with the cheese!!

Far safer to restrict winter times for aftys sake

Travel through the night?I think not on the canal sections as the eclusiers shutup shop around 1900 hrs local time.On the rivers I think the peniches are ok at night but yachts pleasure craft under 15m LOA are not allowed to move at night I think - they were not when we came throught to Med last year.As for draught we touched several times with a 1.65 draught. We did it in 28 actual travelling days.I think the 2 weeks quoted in one of the posts is way off.28 - 30 days is v.good going.
