Do you need a Certificate of Competence or something similar to use your motor boat on lake Geneva and if so where can you do the training???

It probably depends upon whether you are sailing from France or Switzerland. From a Swiss point of view, certainly, you need a licence for anything longer than 5m, (or) with a sail area > 15m2 or a motor. An ICC will do (probably even without an inland waterways endorsement) if you are visiting and sailing a vessel with the same flag as the state which issues the ICC. I doubt that you would be allowed to sail a Swiss-flagged vessel without a Swiss licence.

If you are resident in Switzerland then you need a Swiss licence. It is easier to get if you have an existing ICC and apply for your Swiss licence within 12 months of arriving, in which case you only have to do the theory test and not the practical.

And once you get your Swiss licence, then you can only sail Swiss vessels - they endorse your ICC "Not valid in CH".

complicated....the regulation is not straight forward, but beware the consequences if you have an accident without the proper papers ....And Lake Geneva is a big lake with exceptionaly strong winds called "Bise" in German.

The following is valid for any boat with an engine with more then 6 kw or a sailing boat with a sailarea larger then 15 m2.

If you stay longer then 12 month in Switzerland or if you are going to use a boat with swiss numberplates regularly, you must have a swiss license.

If you have a valid license from your country, to use your boat, you are allowed to use your own foreign boat, but not permanent. If you need a license in your homecountry for the same boat, and you have no license, you are not allowed to use it in Switzerland. On most swiss lakes, you have to "register" your boat even for very short periods of times and pay dues. Except Americans, otherwise swiss boats would have to pay many, many $ for the intercoastel waterway. (Thanks to Mr. Reagan)

If you have a foreign proof of competence, it may be accepted and changed to a swiss license. For instance, the license from Germany is equivalent to the swiss license.

To get a swiss license, if you have no license at all, you must pass a written test and do a practical test, consisting mainly of a man over board (the official way), when you change cours- first look behind you and do some driving into a marina box without using the boathook or your hands and anchoring.
