Hi,
In my worldwide quest to find a good 2858 Bayliner I have stumbled across this company..........................
http://www.boatsdirect.co.nz/
And having exchanged numerous emails with the M.D i now have a quotation for a brand new (old stck 2006 model) Bayliner 288(was called 2858) 5.7 Merc 350 mag with B3 DP leg,all costs incl shipping vat etc etc to a UK port at a price which is less than I can find a 3/4 yr old used boat in the UK!

They seem ligitimate and I've just asked for references off past customers!

Will need to do some serious homework on this co I think as they are talking about 80% of cost upfront (paid to what looks like again a very ligitimate holding company)who pass the money on when boat gets shipped.

So if anyone can offer any insight I would very much appreciate it.

Thanks
Rob

I am sure that a new user popped up here a couple of months ago, saying he had ordered a new boat through this company.

Opinion was split over wether he was a genuine guy asking for advice or an employee (or agent) of that company. (My feeling was that he was working for them.)

If he was genuine he should have got his boat by now. The thread was here , might be worth a PM to him for more info.

Don't know if you're online now but reply just in , see if you can provide any further details to help

Hi Dave

I'm assuming the link to a financial services company was correct and maybe they are selling a boat which they owned or have repossessed.

I haven't heard of them at all - may be wrong but being in Christchurch which is by no means the centre of business and finance that it may service mainly rural customers or perhaps is a small time behind the scenes provider of hire purchase, areas where I have little contact or contacts.

But emphasize that I don't know. However when I find names such as "Lynch" in unknown company names which seem to perhaps be used to borrow familiarity off more well known organisations for self aggrandisement (in this case off "Merril Lynch" the big international financial service company) my suspicions are aroused as to the integrity of the business.

But that is about all I know - an internet search turned up nothing which infers they must be small players. Sorry I can't be of more help.

What is the boat and name if that is available? Many boats owned or with connections with Christchurch are kept up in the Marlborough Sounds where we usually sail as is no real marina in Christchurch - a long shot but maybe I know it. Also if I knew the boatbuilder, etc may be able to comment.

Dave
Thanks for all your help.
As an update to this thread, after posting on the Bayliner owners club website I think I've found the dealer in the USA who is stocking the above said boat!
I have contacted them via email this morning with a view to carrying out a personal import if I can get the price right!!
Anyone know of shipping companies who run the route from the east coast USA to UK.
And any other advice would be welcome.

Thanks
Rob

Peters & May operate weekly shiping from Florida and New Jersey on the Eastern Seaboard. I shipped a 26' chris craft back in 2005, and the cost was £1500 + VAT. It is a volume measurement however, so the 288 is probably going to be twice that.

I have spoken to boats direct before. The guy in NZ seems genuine enough, but when I was looking they refused to accept that CE marking was their responsibility so I walk away.

When I was looking to import from the states I exchanged a few emails with this guy, seemed on the face of it to be very helpful and knowledgable, was happy to organise the shipping and marking of any boat I found in the US should it be necessary. Also, he ships them to Bristol, which is pretty useful for you.

Hope that helps.

CE Marking would'nt be their responsibility. It's the responsibility of the importer ie the buyer in this case, to ensure the boat is CE marked
Out of interest, did it turn out to be worthwile importing the Chris Craft from the US? Nice boats but very expensive here in the UK

They just get it all done in the states on your behalf, same as they would if they were importing the boat themselves. The prices they quoted me were very competitive.

Yes, I understand that mike. But boatsdirect do a delivered to the dock package and arrnage shipping and handling for their customers - so in that case THEY are the importer. If they just brokered the dela and said 'right, your new boat is in florida, go pick it up' and you arrnage shipping and handling you would be correct.

With regard to the Chris Craft, I did OK out of it. It was an older (1997) model, which I paid £13k for. Once shipping and CE and VAT was delt with it owed me around £18.5k and I taded it with EBY for £22.5k (though with a trade in you are never quite sure of its true value). They sold it for more than that though, so all in it was an OK deal.

I might be a little off with my maths here but .... you paid 13K for the boat - after CE, Tax etc it owed you 18K so now the boat cost 31K with the original 13 - then you traded it to EBY for 22.5K still means that you are out of pocket by 8.5K?? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
