Boat Regulations

I have inherited a 26 ft river craft, in need of some major re-fitting. Unfortunately, I am new to the boat arena and am only aware that there is an equivalent to an M.O.T which the boat must pass.

The question is, where do I find out about this M.O.T and what is it actually called?

I don't want to re-fit the boat to find out I've broken all the safety regs and then have to start all over again!!

All help very welcome.

You are talking about the much hated BSS (British Safety Certificate) there's dozens of Inspectors around. Some who are Mr Jobsworth, some who interpret the rules to their own ideas, some who can't read and write properly and some who need taking out and deflowering with a pineapple.
I can reccomend Bill Kane who is a boater himself and his number is 0208 6792054 or mobile 0774 7114715

It all depends on where you wish to use your boat. The Boat Safety Scheme applies to most inland waterways, upper Thames etc. but not the Norfolk Broads, for example. Also if you are 'estuary cruising' you are exempt. Best to check first before throwing away wads of the hard earned.

As the censor on this gentlemanly forum I have to point out that "deflowering with a pineapple" is an unfortunate choice of words unbecoming of our contributors. Unless you clean your act up, I may have to sentence you to three weeks hard labour replying to mikeharvey's posts on PBO

And anyway, how do you know the guy even likes pineapples?
He might be into prickly pears!

I have to comment as well on 'deflowering with a pineapple' - where did you get such an expression? Did you think of it and is there a deeper hidden meaning that evades us on the choice of vitamin C supplement? Which end is inserted anyway - out of purely scientific interest? Great expression - will remember that and use it when occasion demands - the expression that is!!!
