Subject says it all, boat is located near woodbridge quay and its Genoa has become unfurled and the main sail cover was also flapping, Picture below if anyone knows the owner could they tell them please. This was about 10:00 this morning sorry picture is poor.

why o why dont folk use a sail tie, especially this time of year
Such a simple precaution. I have done this ever since the day about 2 weeks after I bought my first boat, when I visited the marina where she was (Chichester) after a gale and saw two other boats with genoas ripped to shreds.
It's on my 'leaving the boat' list and always gets done.

Interesting - I've never used a sail tie on my genoa - I always tie both sheets back to the self tailing winches and make sure the furling line is tight which has a deck mounted clutch to hold it. All the ropes are newish and the genoa is tightly furled. I never think about it when it blows and I'm not on board. Saying that one often sees yachts with slack sheeta and loosely furled sails.

I think there comes a point when the size of the boat and maybe the cut of the sail (ours is not a deck scraper) precludes using a sail tie on the genoa as you can't reach high enough to get to the clew.
To overcome this, we furl the genoa tightly and let the sheets wrap around several times to hold it in place.
We also keep the sheets tight and have the furling line in a clutch.
I have seen some 'big' boats near us do this and then take the sheets forward and tie them off at the pulpit. That's ok for them as they have crew to put them back!
