Boat Name Letters

Thanks guys, had a quick look and FM it is then.

But any ideas on what size would be "normal" on a 22 footer? Daft question at first glance (but not as daft as others!) but there's not a lot of boats near me where I can nip out and have a look. I'd like to get them ordered and take them with me next time see the boat.

You need to think about the size and shape of your boat's transom and choose sizes that will be in proportion. We did ours last year and chose a size that resulted in the boat's name being about two thirds of the width of the transom. with a short name like yous you might choose a size that means the name takes up say 40-50% of the width. Most lettering suppliers will be happy to help you make a good choice.

There will be a shop or unit in the nearest big town which has the computer equipment to print "Alea" in the font of your choosing. Try marketing supplies or similar - it's the same stuff that goes on the sides of vans etc. Also, they'll tell you how to put it on - using a spray with water and a bit of washing up liquid no doubt? Don't try and do it dry if you want a good result!

Too small looks silly. From memory, I have the name in 10cm and the port of registry in 5cm, and that looks OK. That's on a 26-footer, but on yours I would go for the same.

Vinyl signs. Any signmaker these days will do it for you. You can supply your own graphics as a JPG file to make it even cheaper. I don't understand how water will improve the adhesive's grab.

The size and style of lettering is too important to do in a rush. Much better to take some tape and see what looks right on the boat, as each will be different. If you want simple lettering and don't mind paying marine prices there are plenty of boat name companies on line. For much more choice and much cheaper, go to your local van signage company. They will make up anything, let your creativity run wild. It will be far cheaper and you can incorporate grahics, lines, flashes etc to make the sign stand out, not just stuck-on letters you got on-line. Here is my daughter helping put ours on last winter.

I seem to recall I made up some different versions using various fonts and sizes on my home PC until I knew what I wanted. Then I think FM sent me an example of the finished product (email?) for a final check. Very helpful.

To see what the name would look like on the boat in different styles and fonts I took photos full-on side and stern, uploaded them onto a PC then imported to PowerPoint. i then overlaid different fonts, colours and graphics on the image until I had the look I wanted, then I was able to scale it from the photo reference points and knew the exact font.

Some considerations:

Make sure they use 7 year vinyl.
Beware of fonts with spidery edges (as in Feckless above) or thin serifs, they are weak points.
If you intend to do your own layout, use a CAD or drawing program rather than an image; the latter will require them to convert it. However, you will need to supply any non standard font unless you send an image. It doesn't need to be a TTF, signmaker will advise.
Doing a mock-up with a picture is a good idea.

I've got a vinyl cutter, and happy to do it at cost, but Funky Monkey get their vinyl in bulk so can probably do it cheaper.
