Boat Mattress Issues

We bought a bespoke shaped mattress from Millbrook at the end of last year, delivered end of Jan this year.

We had a lot of problems with the bed. Bearing in mind the cost (in excess of £2000), the service we received was dreadful.

It was incorrectly measured or manufactured (one section didn't fit) - they measured it.
The dry mesh didn't fit and a layer of foam to level up the bed wasn't delivered and a small infill piece wasn't delivered.

It took weeks to get resolved (including having to threaten legal action), finally being resolved in March.

The final bed was OK, so we left it at that.

We removed all the mattresses, foam and dry mesh this weekend to give it a good air in the sunny weather and found that the bottom of the mattress is very mouldy and seemingly rotted through in a couple of small areas. It is a just over 3 months old (the original pieces that fitted)!

Our boat is not that damp. We have warm air heating and ventilate it regularly.

Has anybody else had problems like this?

We will be going back to Millbrook, but on past experience they will not be that helpful, so it would be useful to understand other peoples experiences with mattresses and Millbrook.

Thanks

Is the dry mesh the proper 12mm DryMat?

We fitted this for the first time last month and it seems to stop the dampness under the mattress but we made sure that it comes round the side of the mattress so the edge is exposed to the air to allow the DryMat to "breathe".

We have recently taken delivery of a bespoke spring mattress from Wizard and are very happy with the service and the product.

Did you have the same problem with the old mattress? We have dry mesh under ours but the boards are still quite wet every morning. We didn't have mesh on our old boat and the boards would be soaked but never had a problem with the material rotting.

You seem to have disproved their bold claims:

From: http://www.millbrook-caravan-mattresses.com/en/our-range/dry-mesh

I'm not a lawyer, so can't say if they can be held to these.

Never heard of DryMesh but we used DryMat. They both look the same but reading the specs DryMat is 12mm thick and DryMesh is 10mm thick.

I've no idea if this makes any difference but, in either case, I suspect you need at least one edge open to the atmosphere to allow it to vent properly.

The old mattress was just foam, probably as old as the boat (1973). It did get damp (no dry mesh) but never too bad.

I guess you can’t blame the supplier for the damp issues but I would have thought that the material in an area known to have potential for damp would be resistant to rotting??

Exactly - it is a boat and inherently damp to some degree, so we would expect the material to last more than 3 months.
