I really looked foward to "Boat Mart" or Boat as they called themselves as not only did it target the sort of boat I am looking to buy but the articles were "Fresh" and Motor Boat based. If I want to read about "Baggywrinkle" or what is the approved head gear to wear to stop the boom knocking you unconscious when you Gybe, I will buy Yachting Monthly. Practical Boat Owner dosent do it for me any more. I will still buy it, but reluctantly.
Would somebody please state when "Powerboat" is out.

I second the comments about the yottie focus in PBO. I wonder if anyone at IPC is listening...? Some of the tips are common to both, but they are too few. The interests of the tinkerers are not really covered anywhere. MBM is too focussed on the expensive end. I'm no more interested in the latest 45ft+ offering from Sooperboats than I am in the latest Ferrari - I gave that up in adolescence - and I'd hate to offend anyone, but I really don't want to see pictures of smiling couples, now on their tenth boat, wondering how anyone gets by with less than 35ft. Not a socialist rant, and good luck to them, but it's just not for me. Can we have an engine maintenance series that even recognises the existence of the outboard motor?

I quite agree. I had a 15 year old 9.9 Evinrude which had only done about 75 hours and it needed a new impeller. But I did not want to do it myself as I had not got a clue about how to strip the bottom end. so I had it serviced "Professionally" (and it wasent right and they had to do it again). Certainly if PBO can devote 4 pages to DIY Anodising which virtually nobody is going to try, they should show "How to service your Outboard Impeller", which thousands would do, after all it should be a yearly service inspection item.

I think the new format Powerboat & Rib is ok in terms of the size/market of stuff included, but lacks practical content. It still has quite a bias towards ribs too, but I guess that's inevitable and provided there is a little of everything, doesn't bother me a bit. As someone relatively new to boating and doing my first 'rebuild', I'd certainly be interested in more 'how to' content and features on other reader's boats where they have done similar.
There are also far more older boats out there sub 40' - from powerboats to small day boats and fishing/leisure craft like Shetlands etc and they don't seem to get much coverage. Many smaller boats will be trailer based too, so features like slipways and facilities around the coastline - costs, parking, local hazards & limitations (on and off the water) and local 'must visits' would be interesting. The odd article on issues specific to moorings, trailer maintenance and routine stuff like diagnosing a fault, fitting a new chartplotter, radio or other widget etc would also add relevant content for many.
I'd have thought that these fora would provide IPC with a valuable wealth of information on what gets asked most and what's topical/popular?

Hi all, i have been looking for a boating magazine for a while, but was unsure about CSL publishing. but now we know.
well as a thought, there is enough knowledge on here for us to create our own and provide readers with want they want.

I would have thought that before "Boat" Magazine ceased publication the Editorial Staff had "Penned" Articles which have hitherto not been used and could perhaps be bought from the liquidator for peanuts. However would I be wrong in assuming that "Boat Trader" and "Boat (Mart)" we associated as Boat Trader appears to be getting better.

CSL didn't go bust as far as I'm aware, they simply decided to 'suspend' publishing for the winter. They originally stated that they would be considering a bi-monthly or electronic only resumption in the spring, but as they have been refunding subscriptions and laid off staff I think this is now unlikely.

Surely this would be the time for IPC to do what they should have done years ago, make MBM focussed on the cheaper more practical elements of power boating and MBY the posh stuff? Are two very similar mags, as they are at present still sustainable?

You need editorial staff who understand boat maintenance; like Emhrys when MBM first started as a practical mag'.
