I'm about to start ringing round to find the best option to book for lift out and storage for 1-3 months in the Plymouth area, starting January/February '18 but possibly earlier. Weir Quay is nearest but not the best for access if you are travelling from outside the region. On my list are Torpoint, Blagdons, Plymouth yacht Haven and Plymouth Boat Services? (the on on N side of cattewater)

Any recommendations? Price obviously but I want to be able to work on the boat myself.

I would rule out anything west of the Tamar, certainly Torpoint and Millbrook, although cheaper, the extra travel time would drive you nuts. Blagdons ok but you do have to travel right through town. QAB is handy but probably expensive and a corporate job.

Plymouth Yacht Haven is another large concern with all the silly rules that that normally implies, eg: If you have the mast taken down a rigger has to be employed in addition to the yard staff. What for, you may ask?

Plymouth Boatyard and Marina (formerly Shore Store) was founded by local people who most people find friendly, laid back, helpful and approachable. I used them for many years and they are the best all round yard I have known.
However.
Their prices have gone up and they are no longer a bargain.
The yard is long and thin so you could have to wait, a little, to be hoisted in; it pays to know when you want to be launched in advance.
They use a crane which is never as smooth an operation as a Travelift
I don't think they cater for anything over 35ft ish

Both of the latter yards are very easy to reach off the A38 without going near Plymouth, a huge housing estate is being built to the East though and this may complicate matters in the future.

If you wait until January, Shorestore will probably be full. It's very popular with locals for the reasons mentioned above and you need to plan carefully to use it, also mentioned above.

Very friendly though, relatively cheap and well run and good if you want to DIY without any nonsense.

West of Tamar, e.g. Torpoint is not a problem, not as far as Cargreen; it's just that Weir Quay involves taking the right hook north of Dartmoor so less convenient - not a deal breaker although they are probably full now.

I currently have my UFO27 ashore at Yacht Haven Quay, not the cheapest but I found its fairly easy to get to from the A38 and the staff are helpful.

Highly recommend Yachthaven Quay. Part of Plymouth Yachthaven but not so far to travel and just 10 minutes off the A38 Expressway. Very helpful staff and a very slick setup.

We have been using Treluggan Boatyard to winter ashore for the last few seasons. We are very happy there. The new owners are already making some good improvements and Richard the yard manager is very helpful. It's 15 minutes drive from the Tamar Bridge, so not really much further than driving into Plymouth time wise.

It's usually better to take the Devonport turn-off from the A38. It takes a little longer than going through Plymouth if Plymouth isn't busy. When it is (EG Plymouth Argyle at home), it saves a lot of time. I live near Blagdons so do this a lot.

I've just decided to use Blagdons this year. It will be our first time so I can't offer much comment except to say they seem a friendly bunch.
