Probably like many other boaters - I like to have various books, magazines and manuals to fall back on ... for ideas and reference.
One aspect that crops up when reading some of the "Advisory" types is the levels of gear they advise and is it all necessary.
We have the RYA Guides to what should be carried on a boat ... and the books written by reputable yachting people. So my question on this topic is :
How many people actually carry all the items listed in the RYA Guide ?
Onto other points ... the books are great and when reading - you think - Hey why didn't I think of that, or I haven't got that but yeh ... I want one ... etc. How many actually go out and get it or make it ... actually fulfill that Yeh I want one ?
Sometimes I sit and look at the gear on my boat and I wonder - How the hell did it all accumulate and what do I want it all for ... but you never do anything about it .. it just becomes part of the permanent trash on board ... Anyone else ? Must be loads of people like me for that one !
OK a serious note about Inventory's ............ How many here have actually listed out their inventory and given it to the Insurance ? How many actually have a list ? even if its only personal ? If you have one - when did you update it last ?
Having fallen foul of Insurance in the past - I now maintain an Inventory list .. with bought in / present values listed as well. Where possible it has Serial Numbers and whether it stays on board or goes home etc. My list actually exceeds the "extras" value on my insurance ... commonly on smaller boats like mine 1500 quid or so ... then above that incurs extra premium etc. I don't mind so much that list exceeds - as often claim is for not the whole list but part of it - so in effect you are variable on what is calimed for !! if you see my meaning.
I bet there are a few out there that haven't made an inventory list ... a few that thought about it but left it for later ...
Anyway .. a last question ... do you think that a Compulsory minimum standard of kit should be on a boat ... (Baltic as well as other Countries do it ... whether successful or good is not the debate here ...) ... and without overloading the forum what should be in it .. (important items shall we say ?) ????
