Boat inventories ....

Probably like many other boaters - I like to have various books, magazines and manuals to fall back on ... for ideas and reference.

One aspect that crops up when reading some of the "Advisory" types is the levels of gear they advise and is it all necessary.

We have the RYA Guides to what should be carried on a boat ... and the books written by reputable yachting people. So my question on this topic is :

How many people actually carry all the items listed in the RYA Guide ?

Onto other points ... the books are great and when reading - you think - Hey why didn't I think of that, or I haven't got that but yeh ... I want one ... etc. How many actually go out and get it or make it ... actually fulfill that Yeh I want one ?

Sometimes I sit and look at the gear on my boat and I wonder - How the hell did it all accumulate and what do I want it all for ... but you never do anything about it .. it just becomes part of the permanent trash on board ... Anyone else ? Must be loads of people like me for that one !

OK a serious note about Inventory's ............ How many here have actually listed out their inventory and given it to the Insurance ? How many actually have a list ? even if its only personal ? If you have one - when did you update it last ?

Having fallen foul of Insurance in the past - I now maintain an Inventory list .. with bought in / present values listed as well. Where possible it has Serial Numbers and whether it stays on board or goes home etc. My list actually exceeds the "extras" value on my insurance ... commonly on smaller boats like mine 1500 quid or so ... then above that incurs extra premium etc. I don't mind so much that list exceeds - as often claim is for not the whole list but part of it - so in effect you are variable on what is calimed for !! if you see my meaning.

I bet there are a few out there that haven't made an inventory list ... a few that thought about it but left it for later ...

Anyway .. a last question ... do you think that a Compulsory minimum standard of kit should be on a boat ... (Baltic as well as other Countries do it ... whether successful or good is not the debate here ...) ... and without overloading the forum what should be in it .. (important items shall we say ?) ????

Umm! Do all you have stated as a matter of course. Insurance is specified separately as value of the boat and value, and serial numbers where relevant, of all other items. But I'm part 1 registered and approved for charter so it goes with the territory....

Hi SBC,

We have a fully detailed inventory of all equipment on board, including the model, serials numbers, date of purchase etc, a copy of which we send to the insurance company each year. In addition, we also send them a resume of all work, mods, undates and so on that have been carried out on the boat during the preceding year.

It all sounds a bit OTT maybe, but as we use it for our own records, it's little extra effort to sent it to them and does ensure that there is no argument in the event of claim if kit is stolen or damaged!

By far the most useful 'list' we have (whilst cruising) is a VERY highly detailed 'Stowage Plan', which shows where EVERYTHING on board is kept - locker by locker, bilge section by bilge section etc.

The time it saves in being able to locate ant bit of kit/spare without emptying God knows how many lockers to find things as we used to do, makes it well worth the full day it took to list on the computer. A printed version is kept in by the chart table for instant reference.

Saves loads of temper-inducing 'where the hell is its!!! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hi Nigel,
I don't carry any lists of the equipment but In Finland the yacht clubs demand that the boats when the boat flies the yacht club flag she has to go through an annual survey and it has the list of minimum, according to the class (a,b,c...), of "safety" equipment the boat has to carry . Also the insurance companies give 20% discount when the survey has been made.
Personally every autumn I empty the boat 100% and in the spring I consider what is worth while taking back. A multihull boat has to be light to sail well ! Of course I'm not the only one to decide , the boss is the one I have to covince !

Interesting .. about Finland

My pal in Finland has a small boat and he has it moored somewhere near Helsinki ... but on an island I believe.

I've noticed that the Latvian and Estonian Safety Inspection Inventory's are near identical to the RYA UK lists od recc'd gear. In fact the Estonian text is literally a translation of the RYA book. Probably why so many people cheat on it and ignore a lot of it !!

Re: Interesting .. about Finland

IN Galicia on a boat for inshore waters,5miles off shore we are required to carry,3 hand flares, lifejackets,a bailer, fog horn,a heliograph and a national flag(no specified size). My last boat they specified two fire extintors, and life rings,I for every two people. Here they specify the number the boat can carry which affects the insurance. This is having a downside effect on the national festival of sailors St Carmen where all the fishing boats loaded up to the gills with any body who wanted to go and follow the procession out to sea.Nobody was covered by insurance except the crew and as a boy was injured last year the fisherman have refused to continue with thetradition unless the insurance problem is sorted.....we hace p.p here as well!!

Licence for number of people ....

Estonia also declares number of people boat can carry .... my mates Conrad 12 which is designed for Offshore racing and has up / down bunks etc. for 12 people is only allowed 10 !!

Another boat which is bunked for 6 and is centre cockpit - similar to a Hilyard 12ton is licenced at 12 ... even though slightly smaller than above Conrad ...

Sort that one then !!

Qualified for EU ......

Who is ?

But interesting when you visit Pirita marina and see some large boats and nice cars pull up to them ... Porsche Carrera 4 for example ... Guess what job the guy has ? Yep - he's on the EU Commission in Tallinn.

The trans Baltic Highway started some years ago being built and funded by EU ... Runs from Tallinn through Riga to Klaipeda and Vilnius. Now isn't it funny that the main financial centre I'm told is tallinn for this and isn't it funny that Lexus 400's, Merc 500's, Porsches, Range Rovers etc. etc. started appearing ........ Now I would never think to connect those would you ? Now just because they park outside the building wher I believe the EU people work - well maybe thats just a co-incidence ????

Now I could never say that ....

Re: Licence for number of people ....

Is it possible.......maybe we could twin cities!!!!!!Then we could organize a race every year, this has great potential. As a semi serious joke they say if you meet a Galician on the stairs its difficult to know if they are going or down!!

Re: Licence for number of people ....

Estonia and Galicia...there is probably a viking link;certainly in the ability to spend eu cash there can be no equal....maybe Estonia?

A good idea. I was talking to a man who's boat was sunk last year and he found his insurance cover wasn't nearly enough for all those things you might not normally think of, e.g. spare specs at more than £250 a pair, camera, Walkman, mobile phone, walking boots, clothing, electronic car key [BMW in his case - not cheap.] It soon adds up to a tidy sum.

Trouville, it is all a matter of age - presumably you are in the first flush of youth!
