The Insurance for our boat is coming up for renewal and I thought there must be specialist brokers who deal with older boats. Our boat is a converted MFV built in 1946 and most brokers don't want to know because of her age, and they are not familiar with the type of boat. Our premiums are now in the region of £1200 per year and rising. Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I came across one or two examples of this when looking for insurance for Border Maid (built 1948). SAGA eventually got my money. Their online quote system only allows an earliest date something like 1970 and they had to consult their underwriters to quote a premium but in the end it was quite reasonable. It will of course also depend on how much you and your surveyor think the vessel is worth.

Oh really? I'm not sure what you think they should cover that they don't. When I had a mast clash with the vessel on the next pontoon in November and damaged masthead equipment they paid up immediately. Did I mention that because the claim was for damage occuring while on a marina berth they paid the whole claim with no excess? Oh yes and under those circumstances no loss of no-claim discount either....
Yes they're rubbish. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Thanks for that. Funnily enough we originally insured with Saga and then after 2 years, they declined to renew. Unfortunatly they did'nt give a reason, we had no claims, and it was a marina berth.

KC Powell's number is 01702 470035. I'm afraid I can't remember the name of the guy I spoke to. Rather than just filling in a proposal form I explained what I wanted..... I'm about to buy a Hillyard..... and the only sailing I've ever done is on a car ferry...... and I need insurance......

They were very helpfull and the premium was cheaper than my car insurance!

Sorry to butt in on this, but I was wondering if all insurance companies require a new insurance survey every 3 years as mine does. Gets mighty expensive with what is charged for a insurance survey.

Brigid Mary, I have insured my 1957 Yachting World Rambler through J. E. Mottram Insurance brokers, Stockport, Cheshire. Tel. 0161 426 0151 for the past five years or so. I did need to have a survey done two years ago and their premium for mine, which although not worth the same as yours is very reasonable indeed. They are agents for Noble Marine, Pleasurecraft, Underwriters for Norwich Union. Best wishes, Kevin Mitchell
