Boat in build pics (Squadron 78)

The Bonifacio night shot looks pretty good if you flip it...

What a fantastic end to one of the best ( the best ever? ) threads I have ever read on the Forum!! Thanks for taking the time and trouble to post all the detail over the past 8 or 9 months.

I think Match looks better in her element ( SoF ) than she did at LIBS! :D

Thanks jfm. I hope that will be the first of many fabulous cruises on Match.

I had no idea that Bonifacio looked like that.

Did the journos drink you dry and eat you out of house and home or are they still learning? :D

Bonifacio is stunning. It is up there in that list of ports you kinda need to do in your boating career. Valetta, Istanbul, SanFran-Golden Gate, Sydney Harbour bridge, Dartmouth, Monaco and a few others. It really does look precarious though with those houses built on what is now a chalky shelf...

Jack and Chantal were pretty accomplished drinkers and eaters, naturellement. They were delightful guests, lots of fun. Jack is a pretty cool boat driver. It was pitch dark 11pm and I asked him to drive it into Villefranche marina and park while we took on water (watermaker is being commissioned next monday by the local dealer; unuseable till then). Villefranche is a VERY tight harbour for a 78 footer. He had the added pressure of 7 other guests incl the owner to see him mess it up, if he were to do that. But he drove it in perfectly, at a graceful 3 knots. Anyone on board or ashore would think there was a salty seadog 50 year old driving and I for one would have been smug if I'd driven it like that. I certainly couldn't do that when I was 21.

I don't think that's right Mapis. The analogy with the 60T boat that you make is not logical. The stabs add weight but they add hull volume too, so they are indeed weightless so far as the boat is concerned. i mean, they do not make the boat hull sit any lower in the water. Normally when you add hardware to a boat the existing hull volume has to support it, so the boat sinks a millimetre or two into the water. So I think his point is valid, if you see what I mean. (IMHO!)
Mmmm.... "so, what?" springs to mind.
I mean, I agree that if the fins are neutral, the hull w/l is unaffected.
And if they're positive, which I guess is what they meant by buoyant, the hull w/l would actually be even lowered (hull sitting higher).
But aside from being probably a matter of even less than a millimiter, hence totally negligible, that's not the point.
The total volume of water displaced by the boat would remain the same after removing the fins and putting them onboard, regardless of the effect on w/l, wouldn't it?
And of course, the total drag is bound to get worse anyway, no matter how well the fins are designed, if compared to the same hull with no fins at all.

That's all pretty much academic though, and doesn't change the fact that stabs are one of those things which anyone would want, after cruising on a boat with them!

That aside, stunning pics indeed. And stunning boat, of course, but we all knew that by now.
The Lavezzi pics make me particularly envious, that spot is simply a-we-so-me.
All the very best for a fantastic cruising season, hope to see you around southern Sardinia sometime this summer.

PS: my mistake re.the 37kts, the article generally referred to the Sq78 and I didn't notice that in that point they mentioned a Princess...

Ok John, is there anything else to attract us to move Eos to the Med? :):):

John, there is LOADS more there that you'd love. I have 100s of pics, just from this last week. Wait till Jimmy TB and Hurricane et al get chance to do a cruise thread. They went, for the first time, to Monaco, Calvi, Bonifacio, Lavezzi, Scandola reserve/Girolata and I think you'll find they were amazed at how beautiful these places were. But wait to see what they say and we'll post some more pics

I know I sound like a very broken record but you'd have a great time with Eos in the Med for 5 years or so. I know Dartmouth and West Country are beautiful too, but you've "done" those and 5 years afresh in totally new crusing grounds would be a pile of fun. Eos is just the sort of long legged boat to do it in

Edit - just to whet your app some more, a few more pics:

Jfm, the boat and the location look stunning. I,m glad your Easter plans all came together.

I'm just confused by one thing. It's not the brochure any more (Though it might well be) so it is all there for real use.

Can you explain, what are scatter cushions FOR?

Wow, respect. I remember Villefranche being tight for my 48 footer so parking Match in there must have been a bit scary. Great pics, jfm. Looks like all the effort you put in is paying off

Great thread jfm, thanks for sharing your experience :)
Not sure if it is the longest ever or not but certainly the best I have ever followed, interesting and entertaining without constant bickering :D

Good luck and please keep us updated on your adventures :)

Fab - On my way to Bonifacio NOW!!! Just need to calculate how big a bowser I need to tow across Biscay to do it without a stop. :D:D:D

I think Jack's a pretty cool writer too.

Blimey!

All of these kind words! Your bribe is in the post John. ;)

In all seriousness it was a wonderful trip and Match really is as good as she looks... actually, she's better. Being able to experience her close quarter maneuvering first hand was very special and I appreciate you letting me do so John.

Thanks again and I hope you enjoy the rest of the season on her.

Regards,

Jack

Super review! Thank u for sharing.

I see u mention Valletta as future destination. If you are around just drop a PM.

I have sailed into Valetta once, on a business trip where my hosts picked me up in a RIB from my hotel in st Juliens and brought me round to Grand Harbour Marina by sea. Beautiful place.

It's not on my near-term cruising plans though. 2011 crusing will be France/Corsica/Sardinia and Balearics. 2012 plan is to spend a month in Croatia and Montenegro. Then after that, Greece/Turkey
