Boat in build pics (Squadron 78)

It's a Viking 20 Hi-Line, all of 20 feet :eek:. Bought direct from Viking Mouldings in Essex, no middle man ;).

As it's for inland waterways use only, mostly on the Thames and Broads, there's a mahoosive Honda 20 on the back. New SBS trailer to collect in two weeks time as well.

Having had a Fairline 40 up until 2006 and then boatless for five years, we felt it was time to get back on the water. The little Viking gives the two of us eveything we want in a boat - somewhere to sleep, eat, shower and drink. The standard Viking spec is very good but we've added a Propex heating system to make the best use of the boat. All we're missing is aircon, washer/dryer, dishwasher and a genny :rolleyes:.

Viking Mouldings have been very accommodating with alterations to the boat (about 30 requests to minor items), things like cockpit door to open inwards, additional shelving to be moulded in, galley unit to be moved 12" to the left, design of canopy, doors to be cut in under V-berths etc.. We've also highly specced the boat to a standard we want - additional cleats, handrails, co-pilot seat, folding backrests to cockpit seats, dash gauges, BIG horn, bathing platforms, stainless hoop around outboard, entertainment system, choice of upholstery throughout, foam and carpets and many more extras.

As for starting a "new build thread", we saw the boat a week ago and the only pics we have are the one above and a few of a bare inside. We'll next see the build in another two weeks and by which time all the fitout should be almost complete. Handover is then a week after the last "viewing" so not much opportunity for pics in between times - sorry. So, all in all, a 6 week build programme :).

I could paste all of the above into a new thread but TBH, there ain't going to be much to see really. Will see how things go.

sounds great, do start a separate thread once you have your camera! You certainly have them changing a few things!

edited to say that I REALLY dislike the square windows on the customs (and almost too many of them on the 80!)

No big deal because there have often been periods when I've discussed selling it to folks who have expressed an interest, and nothing is done till a large lady sings. I'll post one or two in-build pics of any replacement boat, naturellement, if it happens, and it is a big if. It would be 80 feet, not 100, because much as one can drool over a sanlorenzo 108 (say) i have no intention -regulations or cost wise- of going above 24m.

Just to clarify... the new Squadron 80 is a while away and Fairline are concentrating on bring some new models to market ahead of it, and anyway the Sq78 still sells all they can produce (you cnnot get a new build slot for over a year). So I've decided for a bit of fun to buy another Sq78 for now. I love the one I have (sitting on it typing this) but I quite like the build process to be honest, and the second boat in a series is always going to be better than the first becuase you learn a few things from the first one. So the new boat is ordered and deposit paid, and goes into the mould in a few weeks, and the main build will be June-December 2012 after which it is tentatively scheduled to be exhibited at LIBS 2013 (though that could change) and then I'll get it to France ready for Easter 2013. My current Match will find her way to new ownership some time this summer. Various people interested, nothing signed yet, but I'm confident she will sell to a good home!

I have a number of ideas for tweaks on the new boat which I'll have to post about on mby.com in due course. Given that the new boat will be 90% same as current one there is a risk that an "in build" thread will be rather deja vu and maybe not as interesting. But if you tell me you are such boat geeks that you like in build threads even of the same make/model, I'll be happy to do a new thread and post pictures as the build progresses.

I gotta say I would be delighted if you welcomed a new thread on the build because the input/opinions/debate from folks on here is very valuable during a build. Collectively there are millions of sea hours/miles/brain cells on here, and for example the design of my internal staircase benefitted hugely from forum input the last time round (and that design will go onto the new boat 100% identical, apart from a weld grind/polish tweak, because it has been 100% successful on board Match)

Blimey jfm, you deserve a blue plaque in Oundle town centre for services to the local working population. No wonder Nick Barke is willing to mend NickH's boat:)

I was wondering how long it would take.
Not being funny but with your guidance, Fairline do build a fab boat.

BTW I think I read somewhere that LIBS next year clashes with Dusseldorf which I think would make LIBS a very quiet place.

I think you MUST start a new thread. It's not only seeing another great craft in built, but to also see how post occupancy evaluation feeds back in the design loop! I'd easily write a academic paper on that (my PhD was on this particular topic but that was 20yrs ago and I've since drifted away considerably and only recently coming back to it via responsive/smart environments (as in advanced home automation and such systems).
So, YES PLEASE :D

Its got to be a new build thread! aside from the technical input from people on here, its hugely interesting for the non technically minded people like me to watch!

i thought i was bad about changing boats but you are simply in a different league!!!
